Personal Narrative: Moving To Canada

Decent Essays
Moving to Canada was very difficult because I didn't know anyone and the environment was very unfamiliar. I was culture shocked. I'm not going to say that my English was awful but it wasn't superb either. I didn't have any friends and I've never felt so alone in my life. I was proud of myself because I really strived to better my English so I can improve my conversation skills. It also made me independent and braver. It forced me to get put of my comfort zone which wasn't really a bad

Times have been rough, but I am sure you are aware of this. I am writing to you in a time of extremely dire circumstances. During a case I was part of not too long ago a discourteous lawyer absolutely engulfed in his work decided to say such words that have lifted a forgotten sprit within me. After speaking to the Attorney General about allowing 'mixed company' to be present in cases about prostitution, I was much too overjoyed about winning that I failed to realize the many injustices that are still prevailing, ruining our fellow sisters. It is because of this reason that when I heard such infantile words come out of that lawyers mouth was I absolutely appalled.…

I remember when I use to live in Newfoundland, it was so different for me since I was born and raised in Brampton Ontario, and there was no multi culture on this island. When I first moved there I remember people would stare at me and look at me differently because of my skin color they would automatically assume I wasn’t from Canada or not Canadian because I wasn’t “white”. They wouldn’t consider me as a “Canadian” as well as a “Newfie” because I didn’t have the “Canadian” accent. Another reason was because I wasn’t big on hockey or watched the games they would be so confused and offended because I didn’t have much knowledge on the hockey teams. Remembering all of this again the reason being for many of them not considering me as a “Canadian”…

It was a cloudy day in Chicago, Illinois as a young girl was about to get the surprise of her life that would change it forever. As she walked into the Colonial Cafe she could see the ceramic cow standing right outside. She sat at the table closest to the door with the rest of her family and a plate of pancakes staked placed right in the center of it. This was it, the news she was not prepared for. “We’re moving to Montreal”.…

It was 25 years ago I first time designed a furniture set for a 100 ft2 bedroom. I draw floor plans for the room, furniture draft for workers, which includes storage bed, night stand, closet, desk and a chest with 5 drawers by hand. I still remember the stunned faces while my friends first time visit my home in China, 15 years ago, by seeing my open kitchen, glass wall separator and crimson couches in front a green wall. 7 years ago, I immigrated to Canada. I was more than happy to live in a house, which meant I had more space to design, to decorate.…

What makes a Canadian Canadian? This question was hard to answer having lived here for only a year. In fact, I knew nothing about Canadian history before taking this class, and I don’t watch Hockey. So my initial thought about Canadian was that they don’t have distinct identity that binds them together. In a multicultural society that doesn’t assimilate but integrates other cultures, it was difficult to find a single thing that defines Canadian identity.…

I have moved to a new land that Britain has named Upper Canada. After I had moved into Lower Canada, the government pushed my Tory peers and I out of the French occupied territory. This made the Loyalists furious, why should we, loyalists, be placed below the French, who lost the war, yet, the parliament treats them like the victors. In addition, the ride here was horrendous. It was crowded and dirty.…

Home is a good place to start when reflecting on my personal biography and history. Therefore, to make sense of who I am and to “think [myself] away from the familiar routines of everyday life” (Mills) it requires that I trace my parents’ separate journeys culminating in their calling Vancouver, Canada home. Like a stone skipping across a pond, my grandfather made the journey from Ireland to upstate New York and, a generation later, his son to Vancouver, BC. When questioned on the subject of his wanderings, my father would offer anecdotes about the mountains of snow and bitterly cold winters on the southern shore of Lake Ontario as the reason for picking up roots and leaving family and friends, but I’m sure the real explanation behind his exodus…
