What if they think I am stupid?” I was afraid, but what could I do? I couldn’t speak

Returning to Germany through Vanderbilt in Berlin would be an incredible opportunity, one in which I could return to a place that left a considerable impact on my life. For six years of my childhood, my family lived in Germany, and I completed my first two years of high school at an American high school in Wiesbaden. It has been four and a half years since I moved back to the States, and I realize now how much I squandered while I was there. Despite studying the language in school, I didn’t force myself to practice my skills when interacting with locals. Since my school surrounded me with American students, I made little effort to forge meaningful relationships with Germans my age.…

My families’ migration story dates back to three generations. My great-grandfather came to the United States for the first time through the Bracero Program; a program that “brought millions of Mexican guest workers to the United States [which] grew out of a series of bilateral agreements between Mexico and the United States short-term, from 1942 to 1964.” Unfortunately, my great-grandfather passed away a while back when I was very young, therefore, for this assignment, I decided to acknowledge my parents’ migration story, a story that relies on a series of events that tore our family apart but simultaneously brought us closer together. I interviewed my mother and my father regarding, their own individual migration stories while also focusing…

Akin to a castle, the youth hostel nestled on top of a hill that was an expedition to climb. At the base of my temporary home was a small cobblestoned town with old fashioned houses that seemed preserved in a private history. Walking down the wooden steps and grassy dirt pathways that led us to the town, we 19 Americans began to explore a German town that we'd never heard of, and that we may never visit again. Travelling to Germany has been the highlight of my life, as the desire to explore cultures and languages is a spark I've been carrying for years. The three weeks I experienced ignited that spark into a flame.…
