Personal Narrative: Moving Into The Woods

How many people get to say that they have nine miles of hiking trails and streams right in their backyard? I had moved houses five times before I even reached middle school so when we moved to our current home, I didn’t think we would stay more than a couple years, but thankfully that was not the case. When we first settled in, I noticed a path leading into some trees behind our condo building and knew I had to explore. As I walked through the initial thicket of trees on the dirt path, I saw several bird houses in a field of flowers with another trail leading deeper into the woods. I took that trail and soon found that it broke out into three more trails, then into another three, and then another three. I randomly chose a route and crossed …show more content…
Whenever I was jumpy or anxious, whether it was over an oral presentation for chinese school or for talking to a crush in seventh grade, I would take a walk and find peace and calm in the steadiness of the trees. Whenever I was annoyed or angry, whether I had a disagreement with my brother or a silly pointless fight with a close friend, I would pull on my sneakers and start sprinting into the woods. My anger induced energy would eventually seep out of me and i’d be left walking down a path contemplating why I was even angry in the first place. Whenever I felt adventurous, I would pack a bottle of water and a snack into a little string bag and head out on a trail i’d never taken before. On sunny days, I would pack a picnic and a blanket and paint with water colors under the shade. I often brought my film camera and took pictures of the birds and plants and the shadows the trees made for my photography projects.
A couple years ago my mother became very interested in researching wild edible plants. We would take long walks and identify the different weeds and shrubs that I had seen so frequently before but had never identified. Just learning even the names of some of the different plants made me realize how much knowledge and information existed and was available to

A Taste of Domesticity in Stokes State Forest Throughout my four years of high school, I had never had a friend come back from a post-prom weekend in Wildwood and describe to me what sounded like a “good time.” The stories they told always had the same synopsis that centered around drunken fun and even drunker stupidity. Hordes of juniors and seniors slept in small dirty motel rooms. They spent way too much money on alcohol, and they often got swindled into paying hundreds of dollars to stay in an otherwise dirt cheap motel because no decent place would allow teenagers to party like they did. They sat in their hotel rooms and drank the beautiful New Jersey beach days away, waiting for the sun to set so they could continue their drunken…

There’s a little slice of Heaven in Marshall, Texas, where the sun shines through the pines and the sound of cicadas serenade you throughout your afternoon and the lake shines like a plate of polished silver in the early morning sun. When I first came to Camp Fern, I was on my own. Everyone else had known each other for at least two years, so I was the odd one out. In my cabin there was the usual sort. There was the popular one, the attention seeker, the joker, and the one you love to hate.…

Have you ever been so quiet for too long you just want to scream? That is me when I am deer hunting. I have been deer hunting for as long I can remember, but last year was the first time I had the gun. My dad and I had been in the stand for about an hour and had not seen or heard anything but birds, squirrels, turkeys, and just the wind in the trees.…

Ever since my first backpacking trip 6 years ago, I’ve had an affinity for the Appalachian Trail. I’m constantly looking for excuses to mash our lives into the giant, 50 liter bags, and hit the trail for a few days. This past year, in early fall, I convinced my parents to don their sturdy boots and disappear into the wilds of bear state park with me for three days. We were dropped off at the top of Bear Mountain and, while my parents argued over directions, I wandered around the windswept ridge.…

When I was very little, walking up the trail with a pack on my back and the dog at my side, I would reach out and pull leaves from the bushes and trees. I would tear off corners, smooth the edges, and they would be turned into spaceships, flying across a lush alien world. Sometimes the trail, worn down into the ground over time by paws and hooves, would climb its way up onto the crests of ridges and meander across the moist, mossy fringes of muskegs. The rough, black and gnarled spruce branches that grew there were pirate spacecraft, pursued by the sleek birch branches from beyond the muskeg's soggy borders. As imaginary lasers and rockets exploded against the ships' hulls, I would rip off little pieces of bark and let them fall to the forest floor.…

The opportunity to hunt for me is the best thing I could ever wish for. The date was December 3, 2015, and this is the day I killed my first deer. I was at Pleasant View Elementary School for the whole day, but I left at 2:00 to go hunting with my dad. We went to Rutters to grab something to drink, and something to eat. We got our food because my dad didn’t bring food.…

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. The next thing to go was my hearing, followed by my ability to walk in a straight line. My platoon sergeant saw the signs of heat stroke and forced me to stop. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…
