Personal Narrative: Moving Back To My Old High School

This past September I was lucky enough to travel back to my old high school to observe a past teacher of mine. His name is Don Meyer. Not only is Mr. Meyer a teacher who fully understands his subjects, but the conversations he has with his students make them think critically about their lives and the world they live in. He wants to see all of his students thrive and I could tell as I watched him teach his students. Mr. Meyer works at Mountain Pointe a high school located in Ahwatukee Arizona, Right at the base of Arizona's famous South mountain. When I first walked back into his classroom I was surprised to see he was teaching freshman. When I was in high school Mr.Meyer tough senior english and an honors humanities class. He told me the school's scheduling got a little messy …show more content…
Meyer stood by his door with his small coffee cup, something he has done for years. It was interesting to see that the freshman wanted nothing to do with me, they did not even want to know why I was their. This was something my friends told me happened to her as well. It was the upperclassmen that wanted to know why I was there, and what my name was if they hadn't already met me in previous school years.

Once the bell rang and Mr. Meyer came inside he greeted the class and told them to pull their homework out. In his other classes he usually takes his time getting started, he would ask the class how their weekend went and what was new in the world. I assumed he did not start class this way was because once these kids get talking it's difficult to pull them back in.

Class started off with bell work. Students were instructed to fix the incomplete sentence and then sit silently. Once all of the students finished their work Mr. Meyer would call on them to come up to the board and write their answers. During this time the students began to talk with their friends and lose interest on the

Classroom Setting One of the first things I noticed when walking into Mrs. Curl’s classroom was how pleasant a place it was. Not only was it clean, neat, organized, and colorful, but it also possessed a fun, child-friendly element that made it look like a place any kid would enjoy spending long periods of time in. Mrs. Curl would play music softly in the background at the beginning of her class when the children were doing educational busy-word to keep them occupied until everyone arrived and she was ready to begin the lessons. This improved the atmosphere tremendously as the music was, at times, soothing and at other times fun, kid-friendly tunes that got the kids excited and happy.…

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

One of my most influential moments this semester happened on Matias’s first day here. He was scheduled to do speech with Carter and Mrs. Ciskos, but before the bell rung was already visible distracted. This carried into speech, as he was unable to remain focused and answer Carter’s questions. By the time Jared joined our group Matias was clearly upset, grabbing for his teacher and repeating the same phrase over and over. This in turn effected the rest of the table, with Carter covering his ears and Jared copying Matias.…
