If you’re having trouble adjusting during your first year, talking about it with people you can trust may help. College can be stressful for both sides, you and your family. Calling or checking in regularly can ease the stress and help the transition a bit easier. Understand that being homesick is normal, give yourself time to be sad. You can use this to your advantage. After studying for a hard test, reward yourself with a phone call to a family member. Start thinking of college as being your home away from home. Happiness. Overall, your general happiness is what’s the key to success. If you find yourself in a moment of unhappiness, take a step back and evaluate what is going on. Know what triggers your stress and what can calm you. Find a happy place. If music calms you, invest in a good pair of headphones; so you can listen without being disturbed. Music is a powerful enough to affect our emotions whether we are paying attention or not. Even a little background music is kind to the brain. Music brings our emotions to the surface, when listening to a sad song we, we feel sad and the same with happy music. When we are able to acknowledge how we feel were instantly calmer. Maybe you hate writing essays, listening to music can make you forget your disdain while writing. My writing process include a playlist of Lady Gaga, she’s fierce and proud.
