Personal Narrative: Mount Si High School Swim Team

Decent Essays
My freshman year, the Mount Si High School Swim Team had its first official season. I was one of 15 girls on the team. Hardly anyone knew we existed in the community and at the high school. I helped grow the team from that original 15 to over 40 girls by going to the middle schools for recruiting trips and spreading the word about swim team throughout the high school. Just like every other emerging business or team, we had some growing pains. At times we would struggle to find a pool we could practice in and the first transition from the original captains to myself was tough. They did not leave me any guidelines other than what I

My hands gripped my lacrosse stick tightly and my eyes stared at the ball, which was trapped between two girls. I waited. I waited for the whistle to sound and the ball to fly in the air, the yellow of it vanishing into the sun. I was ready. In the past four years, I have had many experiences with family, friends and an extreme amount of clubs, activities, and home life occasions I am involved in. But in all honesty sports have taught me a lot about people, life and even myself. I have been a part of many teams in my lifetime and played several abstract sports, but at Summit Academy High School the sports are very unique. There are mixed attitudes towards the teams, players and coaches that you would not see at any other school. But I like to call them obstacles and challenges.…

Everyone in at some point in their life will experience an event that will change their life forever; ranging from either a physical or mental change, to one that challenges someone’s beliefs and viewpoints on the world. For me, I experienced all three of these changes during my time on the First Flight High School Swim Team. By being a part of the team, I was able to break away from a former negative aspect on life and realize the potential and knowledge one can gather from those around them. In order to discuss the changes I experienced with the team, we must first break down how and where it all began. After moving around for the majority of the early years of my life, my family would settle down in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina shortly after my father’s retirement from the U.S Coast Guard.…

One situation where I found myself in a fixed mindset was when I was a freshman at Mountain Pointe high school trying to make the baseball team. At the time, I had a half-hearted passion for baseball that made me want to be on the school baseball team, but I felt that everything would come natural to me because I was Dominican. I was quite proud of how Dominicans were typically great at baseball quite naturally it seemed. However, with this knowledge I became highly critical about everything I did when playing baseball at the high school camps before the baseball tryouts. I did not focus on overall improvement as I tried to ensure that every throw, batting, and pitch was perfect.…

However, although I had never anticipated there would be a problem with my talent levels, considering I had played freshman and sophomore year, I did not make the roster. I was devastated. Have you ever felt that all the hardwork you have put into something has been worthless? This is the exact feeling I felt when I lost my varsity spot for the 138 pound weight class on my high school wrestling team. The previous year as a freshman I had been very successful making it to state and helping my team win the state championship, but I was a 106 pounder, the lowest weight class. Over the summer I gained nearly thirty pounds, and I was now wrestling at the 138 pound weight class. I wasn't use to the weight.…
