Asheley Schraeder in this story is a six foot tall red head. She loves horses, volleyball, and most of all basketball. She is a middle school teacher and high school varsity basketball and volleyball coach. She loves jeans and boots and always has confidence. The setting takes place on Mount Diablo in Clayton, California. Summer of 2005.
I drove up the driveway. The dirt turned into a huge cloud behind me. I drove through the gate. The dry dirt road soon turned to pavement. I parked my Jeep next to an abandoned paddock. I started to saddle him. First, the saddle pad. Then, the saddle. Next, the bridle. I put my riding boots on a mounted him. I rode him around in the arena for a little while to get him warmed up. I got off and walked about a quarter mile to the trail gate. I opened the gate closed the gate and we were off riding. We crossed the stream and kept riding up the mountain. Fear struck my body. I was so afraid for no apparent reason. I heard the sound of thunder off in the distance as the rain fell heavier. I turned to walk the next two and a half miles back down the trail. I started walking suddenly a loud stick broke behind me. Followed by a screeching loud sound almost like the noise of a throttled chainsaw. I turn behind me and looked. My eyes tearing up as I was so terrified of what I saw; the rain fell harder, heavier as I was thinking of how much I loved my family. The cougar sitting on the stump behind me was almost twenty feet away as it slowly circled me giving me no escape. I was terrified out of my mind. The thunder fell over me as it grew louder. The mountain lion screamed. Guide was now aware of what was happening he reared. I was thrown from his back as the lion reached out trying to claw the horse I got up as quick as I could and threw myself over the horse's body. The mountain lion re circled us launching at Guide. I heard the sound of pain coming from Guide as he kicked and then bolted. Guide ran as fast as he possibly could, rain piercing my face as we were running down the mountain. I saw blood flying back behind him as he was running. Everything became slow motion, I was so full of fear my mind went blank. Running as fast as he could towards the gate, I could see the fear in Guide’s eyes. He jumped the stream with ease as he
