Personal Narrative: Montana

This summer, I went tubing with my cousins (and aunts. and uncles. but the cousins were the majority). It was… interesting. We started off bright and early (well, not very early; some people decided to stay up late) from the campgrounds we had slept in the previous night. (In case you didn’t know, Montana gets really, really cold at night. Even if it normally doesn’t become quite so frigid, it did that night. I was not prepared and froze while my over-prepared tent mate of a cousin boiled in her-older brother’s-fancy sleeping bag.) From there, it was a short drive out to the lake and an even shorter trip to the rocky, miniature forest of an island in the center.
We unpacked and ate food that was somewhat healthy. (We did have responsible adults there, and when I say that, I do not mean my father, uncles, or older cousins. They were not very interested in being adults and wanted to play in the water. The adults I speak of are the three females over 18-my aunt, cousin-in-law, and stepmother.) The water’s small waves sparkled, beckoning some of us to go out early-too early, as when we fell off the two-person tubes, we froze. We soon stopped trying in favor of the warmth of the rocky island.
In the afternoon, our numbers multiplied as we prepared to go back out onto the lake. A few of my second-cousins came out

We were astonished, as we had been using different sunscreens all day-and frequently reapplying. Even the baby, who had slept in the shade, been constantly covered, and continuously sunscreened, was burned. I have rarely burned in my life, but that night I looked like a bloody tomato. (Later, we discovered that most of the sunscreens had expired. Life Lesson: Do Not Use Expired Sunscreen.) All in all, we had an amazing time together out on the lake-and may have bought out all the aloe to be found in

We were about to embark on a trip out into the wilderness of Gatlinburg, TN that we had never laid eyes on. The best part? We left at 6:30 in the morning with plenty of snow on its’ way. Here I am today singing songs about the south-land;because I miss 'ole' 'bamy once again. Years ago I left my home state of Alabama, where the skies are so blue and I moved to the not so great state of Montana. Many people questioned me on why I moved to Montana, and my response back is because in that moment I felt like I needed a change, but in the end I think I made the wrong choice to move away from Alabama. But soon I will be back to sweet home Alabama,oh,Lord, I'm coming home to you. Back in early March of 1974,I was working at a local convenience store.…

With the windows down, the crisp, cool summer air permeated throughout my body, acquiring every hair to stand at attention. Buffalo surrounded and granged lazily through the corn fields that shot high to the sky, as if every row was assembled soldiers getting ready to march. South Dakota is known for open fields with a consumed, laid back lifestyle with not much ever going on. Going into the trip knowing this, I was not in the least bit excited. It was when I absorbed the laid back atmosphere and appreciated every single bit of their way of life.…

we arrived at Stokes State Forest, and since check in wasn’t until three and it was only about noon, Devin, Sean, Mitchell and I went hiking. It should probably be said that I have some serious ankle problems and that hiking wasn’t the best idea. I slowed the group down and became the butt of many of their jokes. A couple hours later Anthony and the rest arrived in the Plaagin Wagon (Anthony’s minivan) and we split up into our two cabins, planning on meeting for dinner that night at Mitchell and my cabin at around…

I was five when I swam out into Lake Ramsey. The water was a warm brown, as with most water in Louisiana. This was was not the first time I had gone to Ramsey, but this time, it was for a specific purpose. I was going to learn how to ski and my grandfather was going to teach me. This would be the start of the lessons he, as my mentor, would teach me.…

We brought our fishing poles even though we didn’t think we were going to catch anything. The canal was very cold and there was no fish out that day but we still had fun. After a little while of fishing we continued our hike among the High Acre Creasent Trails. As Andrew and I were walking along the trails we came across a small pond and we hung out there and discussed our days and we met up with a few other friends. Once we got to the end of the trail we turned around and started back.…

I consider my hometown to be Grand Forks, North Dakota. I was born at the former United Hospital in Grand Forks in 1994, and have lived here for my entire life—with the exception of about a year spent in Walhalla, North Dakota, due to the flood of 1997. The schools that I attended while growing up are all within fifteen minutes of driving from my current house. My parents live just 6.2 miles away from me. Although Grand Forks is my city of birth, it wasn’t until I started college that I really considered it my hometown.…

27 cousins, 13 aunts and uncles, 2 grandparents, 4 states, 4 cabins, 10 days, and 1 lake. We got to the beach in no time. The sun was still high in the sky, making it more than warm enough for everyone to be looking forward to getting to the ocean. We set up camp on the higher part of the beach, close enough so that the trip down to the water wouldn’t be long and tiring but far enough away to where the tides wouldn’t hit our camps. The camps were sort of sad heaps of everything we had saved from the crashed plane and burning building. Our little spot we had picked out was at the edge of the beach, where the tan sand gave way to green grass and tall trees.…
