We unpacked and ate food that was somewhat healthy. (We did have responsible adults there, and when I say that, I do not mean my father, uncles, or older cousins. They were not very interested in being adults and wanted to play in the water. The adults I speak of are the three females over 18-my aunt, cousin-in-law, and stepmother.) The water’s small waves sparkled, beckoning some of us to go out early-too early, as when we fell off the two-person tubes, we froze. We soon stopped trying in favor of the warmth of the rocky island.

We were astonished, as we had been using different sunscreens all day-and frequently reapplying. Even the baby, who had slept in the shade, been constantly covered, and continuously sunscreened, was burned. I have rarely burned in my life, but that night I looked like a bloody tomato. (Later, we discovered that most of the sunscreens had expired. Life Lesson: Do Not Use Expired Sunscreen.)
