Improved Essays
“Mom, what was it like growing up when you did?” “Well, Katie, I played in the band, and there was a lot of people who played with me at Jefferson City High School.” I asked her what was going on in the world around that time. She said she remembers when the first test-tube baby was born. She went to Washington D.C. to perform for Missouri as the bicentennial of the United States. Also in high school, she went to California to march in the Rose Bowl Parade in 1976. She said that was fun to experience. Around town in Jefferson City, when her senior year started the Capital Mall opened for business.

“Dad, what was it like growing up when you did?” “Well, Katie, I remember many things back then.” He remembers the Watergate scandal

The concerns of an eight year old are as drastically different from those of an eighteen year old as are the worries of a twenty eight year old are from those of a thirty eight year old; when imagining a person ten years superior to oneself, they often seem detached and un-relatable. In the words of every petulant child to their parent, “you just don’t get it.” When it boils down to it, are the generations really that different? One woman raised conservatively in the 1950s saw unbelievable progress is technology and societal norms, she also lived in fear of nuclear war and saw the president’s death; now she believes our world needs better representation and more honesty in our politicians and legislature. Living in a conservative family in…

Mom was small, a slight 110 pounds but through my eyes, she was large, even after my height surpassed hers. To this day, she would argue that she weighed only 100. Her strong presence claimed her space, and anyone else's that she cared to. Being right was of utmost importance to her, and she made sure always to have the last word. Overbearing, and overprotective of me, her only child, she usually controlled every situation, regardless of how trivial.…

I was born in San Francisco to a single mother, and I have never known anything different. My mother provided an incredible life for me, for which I am eternally grateful. At the age of eleven my mother decided it would be financially best to relocate to Casper, Wyoming, where she would have the help of her family to raise me. Although the move was extremely difficult for both of seeing that we created friendships and bonds with people that we would no longer see as often, my mother has never made a decision she didn’t think was best for both of us. My mother always puts my well-being first which has given me my love of helping others.…

Recently I discovered a new love for speaking to and learning about the lives and opinions of other people. I had been involving myself in more quality conversations with anyone from teachers to relatives, and each discussion left me wanting to replicate it with as many people as possible, but how would I incorporate this love into something useful? Fortunately, this discovery tied perfectly to an option on the list of ideas for my History 104 final project. For this reason, I chose to interview a baby-boomer, my aunt Dellilah Johnson, for a portion of my project.…

National memory is a key component of a state’s collective identity. Various interpretations of state histories allow citizens to publicly recollect, and in turn, shape the way that they understand one another in cultural, social, and political contexts. Emile Durkheim and Maurice Halbwachs create the groundwork for defining collective memory, an idea that is very closely related to how national memory functions. Maggie Andrews and Susan-Mary Grant uses this idea of group thinking to explore the topic of national memory and how a nation constantly reminds itself of past events—which Marita Sturken studies deeply, using the United States’ Vietnam War and AIDS epidemic as examples of how a collective memory affects the state’s national culture.…

September 11th, 2001 was one of the most horrific attacks on the United States occurring in New York City. Lots of people can recall where they were at the time of the attack, because of how recent and horrible the incident was. Personally, I vaguely remember what I was doing during the time of the event, since I was only about 5 years old, but I do recall that I was at my friend’s house during the attacks. For this assignment, I chose to interview my grandma before our Thanksgiving dinner, because she has an interesting past when it comes to a certain “significant national movement.” In terms of 9/11, my grandma recalled that she was shopping when it happened.…
