Personal Narrative: Mission Trip Team

Improved Essays
This past summer I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Hungary and serve on a mission trip team with twenty-one other teens and leaders from my church. I, along with the rest of the missions team, saw the sights of Budapest, feasted on Hungarian dishes, and revealed in the beauty of the Danube, but more importantly, we taught and loved on more than eighty kids for one week. For this trip, our mission was to run an English camp at a nearby school. In the mornings we taught English as a Second Language (ESL) to a variety of beginning and advanced classes. In the afternoon, out team split into several groups assigned with teaching different aspects of American culture: sports, music, art, etc. to six different groups of kids organized by …show more content…
It took about an hour on the first day to create a comfortable, comprehensive atmosphere in which all the kids could relax, have fun, and be competitive, and understand what I was explaining through the translator. But once we all got into the swing of things, it was smooth sailing. Throughout the rest of the week we played basketball, flag football, volleyball, baseball, and finally, their area of expertise, soccer. Even though I sprained my ankle playing basketball on the first day, the whole experience was so indescribably amazing, that it hardy mattered. I can still hear shouts of, “Laura! Laura! Laura!” when they would run down the court, waiting for me to pass the football or basketball. I can still see their faces shining in the excitement of victory. I loved every second, and now that I’m back, hardly a day goes by that I don’t think of those moments. Throughout the entire experience, I gave my time, energy, and love, but I gained inspiration. I discovered that I loved teaching, both in the classroom and in the gym, and became inspired to pursue a career in that area. I’m not exactly sure where that road will take me, but I do know that I love working with kids: helping them, loving them, and teaching them. And that’s what I want to do with my own life. I want to encourage and inspire the generations to come: I want to

You would think people who have next to nothing in their lives, would want everything they could have their hands on. After spending a week with people who had less then me, I understood that I was completely wrong. I learned that people who have nothing are the most caring and empathetic. The people who lived at the camp we were staying at, greeted us with open arms and warm hearts. As a mission team, we were obviously caring people.…

After graduating, my dream of an office job was realized, but it didn’t make me happy. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything of substance, that, in the end, my work didn’t really have an impact. It took almost three years of this before I accepted that the path that would make me happy was the one thing that I was sure I didn’t want: a career in teaching. Since starting on this path I feel that I have found what I am meant to do. I feel connected to my work in a way that I never have…

It was the first day of our medical mission trip. The 13 of us were divided into four group: triage, clinic, pharmacy, and faith. Colin, Laure, and I sat in plastic white lawn chairs, facing the locals who sat on three wooden benches. We had prepared a short, spiritual lesson to bring Jesus’ love to the rural cities of the Dominican Republic. When I welcomed them in their native language, their faces softened.…

I was only 14 when I went on my mission trip, but experiencing that such a young age has shaped me for who I am. I was involved in three mission trips, which all occurred in the States, but in all three-mission trips I helped people who I believe needed it most. I was proud of what I did and I think it was something that not a lot of people did at my age. One of my biggest motivators were the people I was helping. After going on my first trip, I had bonded with others and had made me realize what the real world is like outside a small town in Iowa.…

If I could do something I've never done before, I would go on a missions trip. I would choose to do this because ever since I was younger, about in seventh grade, I have felt a call to go to Japan and minister. I feel like if God has given me the idea, it is meant to happen sometime in his plan for me. I would also want to go on a missions trip because that is what God has commanded us to do; spread his word. Taking this opportunity and using it to honor God would be just what he would want me to…

It was October 16, 2012. I was in seventh grade, just a boy to become someone or something. We were loading the bus with our two coaches, Coach Voss and Coach Larh. Coach Voss the offensive coach who liked to make us run, and coach larh, our Defensive coach who taught me everything I known about the defensive side of the ball. This was a big game for me and my fellow teammates this game was going to set the tone for the rest of the season to show that we can be successful.…

Mission's Trip The third week of June, 2015, marks the week my perspective on life changed. This trip contributed to the obliteration of my egotistical state of mind. I went on a prayer tour, spent time at an elderly apartment complex, helped at a community outreach, served at a food bank, and visited a children's learning center. Each of these experiences affected me differently, but were similar in that they all changed my outlook on life.…

What are you grateful for? I’m grateful for my opportunities. Living in a small town in Iowa you might not expect there to be many things to do, but I’ve found invitations for adventure all around me. In eighth grade our school had a trip to our nation’s capital, my church group goes to conferences across states, our band was able to go to Chicago, and our soccer team went to Scotland. However the opportunity I’m most grateful for was when my parents were asked to go on a missions trip to Africa because that trip gave me a realization that changes the way I think.…

When I was in 8th grade, I was extremely shy and quiet. I always tried to avoid conflict and arguments at all costs, even if it meant standing by as an instance of injustice unfolded in front of me. A situation in which I upset someone in my community was a few years ago, when I let an outsider feel unwelcome in a group I was a part of. In hindsight, this conflict was probably normal for girls my age, but it left a lasting impact on me, and shaped how I deal with similar situations now. I was working on a long-term group project with several classmates.…
