When I first met you, I knew exactly what I was missing in my life. Even though I was nowhere close to where I wanted to be in life, I knew that I wanted to start a life with someone. I wanted someone that would motivate me to want more. I wanted something worth fighting for. Someone to share my dreams and build a future with.

It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

Where could it be? I thought. The bright lights of New York City were shining down on me, hiding my dark, depressing life consumed by pain and suffering. My apartment was up ahead, old, and dilapidated; falling apart like a sand castle, but still standing.
