Personal Narrative: Middlesboro

Superior Essays
Growing up in one of the poorest regions of the United States has taught me two things; one, we are not defined by stereotypes, and two, hardships are made to be overcome. Nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains, Middlesboro, KY sits on the Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia border. The multicolored fall foliage and the vivid green mountains in the spring are disserved by the descriptor spectacular. My roots are firmly nestled in the Cumberland Gap where Daniel Boone started his journey to the West decades ago. I am proud to call myself an Appalachian-American. Still, Middlesboro, like many parts of Eastern Kentucky is not without its challenges. The once flourishing downtown of Middlesboro is lined with deserted businesses. The coal …show more content…
That is why my scores for those two characteristics are higher on the scale. I believe the world needs more nice people. People who are encouraging and kind to one another. I feel deeply for other people and care very much about how they are doing. I am a hardworking individual who prides myself on perfectionism, but sometimes I do something wrong—it’s only human. I believe I can take criticism well, but occasionally I have to think about feedback before I come to the realization that the person who was critiquing me was ultimately correct. That is why I gave myself a 9 in the cognitive complexity category. For the psychological adjustment category, I gave myself a 9. As a counselor, you must leave your own problems out of a session. You can’t burden your client with your problems as well as your own. Finally, for competence I gave myself a 9. I love school and I love learning. There is always more out there to learn, whether about cultures, personalities, practical techniques, or even how to prepare a new dish for dinner. Learning is vital to the human condition. I trust that the minute humans stop learning is the minute they cease to exist. As Einstein once said, “Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at …show more content…
While many people see Kentucky and think Lexington and Louisville, we must not forget the small towns full of people waiting on the opportunity to be educated. Kentucky has 120 counties, full of people who desperately need mental health care and have to be met where they are because they simply have no other way to get the help they need. The main reason I want to study Psychology is that it will give me the ability and training to help people and families who have struggled just like my own family and the families I have grown up with. Somebody out there has to get the figurative dirt under their fingernails and meet the people where they are, because sometimes they can’t come to us. Psychology is all about that. Psychologist don’t just want to throw away the key, they want to work through the problem and heal people at their core; it’s about learning to live with your problems instead of just running from them. It’s about truly changing people’s lives for the better through education and service. Eastern Kentucky is my ideal home because of their commitment to diversity and goal of educating the people of our beautiful state. Appalachia defines my very person. I live and breathed the stereotypes and have defeated them in my own way through my education at the University of Kentucky. I seek a program that will equip me, through research

For the past several weeks we have been reading memoirs on multiple sources, ranging from the hills of the Appalachian Mountains, to the streets of Chicago. Both of these places come off not only as different in geography but in lifestyle as well. They also share similarities in some instances. In Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, and Our America by LeAlan Jones, and Lloyd Newman, both stories share similarities in the fact that the people in these stories are restricted by the environment in which they are raised in, but also stricken by poverty which is responsible for the frustrations and hardships in life they face, and the path which was paved for their life. Our America focuses on two boys living on the southside of Chicago,…

JD Vance; An Ivy League Hillbilly Writing On Culture America began in the late 1700s on the east coast overthrowing a mighty empire that spanned the circumference of the globe. From this a nation was born, and its people with an extreme sense of pride rapidly expanded west, over the Appalachians, across the great pains, and to the west coast, settling everywhere along the way. However, somewhere after the Great Depression in the 1900s the Appalachian region started to lag behind economically. A subset hillbilly culture was born, with that intense American pride and an appalling economic situation.…

I decided I wanted to bolster the Appalachian name and establishment. Be that as it may, I would love to bolster the guiltless individuals on standby through the misery of their homes. It’s not hard to notice and realize that there is a major distinction amongst qualities and Environment in the Appalachian. Since the late nineteenth century, there has constantly been a reason behind Appalachian neediness and the backwardness and why they are named as the poor class of mountain livers along with the relatives of convicts and submitted workers. The conflict of innate need is yet being clarified as of now until this day.…

American life and society have created through time. The first settlers on this territory were those that had trouble with finances and other situations and were forced or “pushed” to leave their homes. When people think of a psychologist they always seem to think that it is for adults only. The mental health of children however, is sometimes overlooked. Adults believe that kids do not have any problems because their life is supposed to be happy. But kids go through stress and psychological disorders, in fact, according research 20% of children in the United States suffer from some sort of mental illness each year. Upon considering obtaining a degree in child counseling psychology I discovered how important it is to take time to learn as much as we can about the type of work in this field, job vacancies, pros and cons of the field, as well as learning how long it would take to graduate.…
