That is why my scores for those two characteristics are higher on the scale. I believe the world needs more nice people. People who are encouraging and kind to one another. I feel deeply for other people and care very much about how they are doing. I am a hardworking individual who prides myself on perfectionism, but sometimes I do something wrong—it’s only human. I believe I can take criticism well, but occasionally I have to think about feedback before I come to the realization that the person who was critiquing me was ultimately correct. That is why I gave myself a 9 in the cognitive complexity category. For the psychological adjustment category, I gave myself a 9. As a counselor, you must leave your own problems out of a session. You can’t burden your client with your problems as well as your own. Finally, for competence I gave myself a 9. I love school and I love learning. There is always more out there to learn, whether about cultures, personalities, practical techniques, or even how to prepare a new dish for dinner. Learning is vital to the human condition. While many people see Kentucky and think Lexington and Louisville, we must not forget the small towns full of people waiting on the opportunity to be educated. Kentucky has 120 counties, full of people who desperately need mental health care and have to be met where they are because they simply have no other way to get the help they need. The main reason I want to study Psychology is that it will give me the ability and training to help people and families who have struggled just like my own family and the families I have grown up with. Somebody out there has to get the figurative dirt under their fingernails and meet the people where they are, because sometimes they can’t come to us. Psychology is all about that. Psychologist don’t just want to throw away the key, they want to work through the problem and heal people at their core; it’s about learning to live with your problems instead of just running from them. It’s about truly changing people’s lives for the better through education and service. Eastern Kentucky is my ideal home because of their commitment to diversity and goal of educating the people of our beautiful state. Appalachia defines my very person. I live and breathed the stereotypes and have defeated them in my own way through my education at the University of Kentucky. I seek a program that will equip me, through research
