“ Levántense ya es hora de que se despierten!’’ said my grandma one morning as she was cooking us breakfast.
My brother and me got up wondering why she wanted us up at 3am. I had forgotten but it was the day we were going to the pueblo . It's 3 hours away from Oaxaca, Mexico and we had to find a cab to take us as we packed a couple of clothes.
On the way to the pueblo we were falling asleep, or at least we tried to but we actually couldn't the way was way to rocky. It was also pretty dangerous because there was no railing or nothing we would go up and down mountains.
When we first arrived to the pueblo I couldn't help but notice that it was like a miniature town everyone knew everyone and they would walk to stores instead of looking for a taxi or something. But there was indeed something called “mototaxistas” which were the taxis there and that's exactly what we used to get to the house my dad has there. My grandma, my uncle, brother and me got lost trying to find the house but we made it.

Let me tell you that I have never been so mad at someone I didn't know as I walked in through that green door.
They had my parents house in poor condition. You could tell that they don't clean at all. Even I could keep a house more clean than that. When we came inside unannounced they asked who we were and I said “Los dueños de esta casa” meaning the owners of this

Identity Crisis At first glance most would never think I am Mexican-American. Every person only finds out I am a Latina, when they read my name. Even though people think I am some Spanish girl, they do not realize I am actually a Mexican-American. Growing up I was never told that my ethnicity would ever have an effect on me. For over two centuries, the Serrano family had originated from and had continually resided in a small, overpopulated town named La Reina, in El Salvador. In this town, houses, though structurally unstable in the 1800s, were closely grouped together and therefore called barrios. To the east of La Reina there was mountainous terrain, or terreno, on which harvesters would grow crops under the scorching and unforgiving sun. In addition, due to the disastrous conditions of the roads, cars were uncommon in the town, while horses served as the main source of transportation. Though the community itself suffered economically due to the limited amount of jobs besides farming, the families were closely banded together and it was common for one family…

Being a student at one of the most prestigious schools in the United States, you are given amazing classes which teach us various topics which eventually bring us back to our major or main topic of our undergraduate. Being a Mexican student, my knowledge is primarily about the struggles and stories from my own country. Coming to this school and meeting other minorities from other countries and taking classes that teach us about those countries as well, my knowledge about other problems and stories that happen to other students, families, and youth throughout the countries makes us realize that we are all the same and not alone when it comes to tragedies and inequalities like the ones many of us encounter in the US already. Attending "El Pais Que Viene” a Non-Profit Event & Book Launch, allowed me to connect the various topic and stories I learned in my Chicano studies class called “Central Americans” where we discussed the important events and inequalities that are happening throughout these central American countries and looking at stories through literature and media. Living in the Untied States as a minority, we tend to not tell our stories from our countries or even identify ourselves from those countries due to the negative image that the US has towards the people who come from these different countries.…

My Hispanic heritage and the challenges my family faced shaped my character. My grandparents, uncles, aunts, and father picked cotton in the fields in order to get by and have food on the table. My mother worked seven different jobs during high school and college to pay for her academic studies. Their experiences taught me that it is important to focus on academics in high school and be resilient in college. Being bilingual in Spanish and English is another skill I have and will benefit my future relationship with patients, especially in Texas.…

I am half white and half Hispanic; light skinned with brown eyes and dark hair. This disparity is exacerbated by my very Hispanic name, Reyes Lucero, and my very “white” upbringing. My family didn’t make beans and enchiladas for dinner; they made tofu stir-fry. As a result, it was difficult to connect with people, I was too different. People assume from my name that I come from a very traditional New Mexican family, but my parents are anything but traditional.…

As I looked out of the bus window, half awake from sleeping on the bus ride, I saw a large blue structure with flashing lights at the top jutting into the partly cloudy spring sky. To the right of it was another one, similar looking, but was yellow and red and was somehow even taller than the blue one. I then nervously looked down the aisle out the windshield at the three lane road, each lined with cars and other buses, that was headed toward the island-like peninsula. As we lurched slowly down the road a little bit at the time, a gate appeared with lettering on top that read, “Welcome to Cedar Point.” Just two weeks ago, Mrs. Scharpenberg came into our 2nd period Advanced Placement Language class with a signup sheet, stating that we could go on the annual AP field trip to Cedar Point.…
