My parents did this, they left a country filled with poverty, filled with disrespect and dishonor. Of course this does not speak for all individuals but for the majority.
Slowly, I see the resemblances from this country, to the one my parents were raised in.
This year I went to visit my father's city, a city in which he grew up. He says that it has became even more beautiful than it was before. In that moment I felt saddened by the truth of our world. Our world is greedy and miserable. I gave a gift to a little boy, the gift cost less than 2 dollars, but that little boy had a smile that brought this warmth inside of me. Giving others is what I will do with this scholarship. I will use this scholarship to become educated and give to those who need it most. I will always carry that little boy's smile everywhere I go. I hope to bring others a smile, like that little boy had, every single day of my

My Hispanic heritage and the challenges my family faced shaped my character. My grandparents, uncles, aunts, and father picked cotton in the fields in order to get by and have food on the table. My mother worked seven different jobs during high school and college to pay for her academic studies. Their experiences taught me that it is important to focus on academics in high school and be resilient in college. Being bilingual in Spanish and English is another skill I have and will benefit my future relationship with patients, especially in Texas.…

In the 19 years I have been alive, I have lived in three states, five towns, eight houses, and now, two countries. Right before I finished high school my parents decided to move to Guatemala. I welcomed the change because I had been visiting Guatemala every summer since I was 15, and my heart always seemed at peace there. The closest I perpetually felt at home was when I lived in Guatemala, though I resided there for a short time. Every day greeted me with words rolling off my tongue I previously did not know, the taste of delicious and unique foods, and a breathtaking landscape, complete with the view of an active volcano outside of my bedroom window.…

I am half white and half Hispanic; light skinned with brown eyes and dark hair. This disparity is exacerbated by my very Hispanic name, Reyes Lucero, and my very “white” upbringing. My family didn’t make beans and enchiladas for dinner; they made tofu stir-fry. As a result, it was difficult to connect with people, I was too different. People assume from my name that I come from a very traditional New Mexican family, but my parents are anything but traditional.…

Everything happens for a reason I lived my whole life in Mexico a place where you can meet good friends and, most of them people don’t have nothing not even a dime on them, but they are very humble. I won’t deny that Mexico is also a country where there is so much evil where even walking down the street you can feel yourself unprotected from their own people and the government itself, but nevertheless Mexico is like a playground where you can spend all your time having fun. To succeed in Mexico is very difficult because it firmly depends on two things, time and place, if you don’t have at least one of them your probabilities of success are low. My conflict arises when I had to choose between a better life which was coming to the US and what at the time was my current which was pretty much my whole life, friends, education, etcetera. “Everything happens for a reason” my dad always says, so in order to be successful I had to face the adversities of life and see whether if my current life was better for me or the future life that was waiting for me somewhere else.…
