Personal Narrative-Metastasized Stage IV Liver Cancer

It was a typical day in the McDougal household; my sister was still getting acclimated to college life, my annoying little brother was pushing my buttons as usual, and my only worry was whether I was going to pass my next bio test. My dad was getting ready to leave for a business trip to Singapore but decided to stop in the doctors to check out a bulge in his abdomen. It turned out that the bump was metastasized Stage IV Liver Cancer. We were all completely devastated and couldn’t comprehend how a perfectly normal guy could have so much disorder inside of him. Thousands of individuals are in the same ring as my father fighting their cancer, so anything that I can do to help this battle brings us all closer to knocking out the disease. Ever since the diagnosis, I have thrown my energy into service-oriented clubs and organizations. At my school, I am one of the presidents of the B+ club, an organization that raises funds for families fighting pediatric cancer and cancer research. One of the main events of the club is the student-run annual volleyball tournament; these past few years for the tournament, I have helped create and organize our care package program where we give “care packages,” filled with games, candy, blankets, and more, to about twenty kids with cancer. Additionally, I assisted one of my classmates in her Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year campaign. As a member of her leadership team, I helped brainstorm ideas for fundraising and spoke in front of the whole school about donating money to blood disease and cancer research. Through my participation in organizations like B+ and LLS and in other service activities, I feel fulfilled knowing that I have taken part in something bigger than
