My junior year in high school, I became a student mentor in our campus’s peer counseling program. This was an incredibly rewarding experience as I had the opportunity to help freshman students assimilate into our high school dynamic. As a peer mentor, I assisted students with personal problems and mediated issues with teachers in order to maximize their learning experience. I also acted as a role model for my mentees by talking frequently about AP and Honors courses and how to be successful in such programs. I put effort into learning about each individual's interests and goals so that I could expose them to clubs and academic courses that they may appreciate such as the Biomedical Academy or our school’s robotics team.…

    - I am in a Dean List every semester since I enrolled at Kellogg Community College. - I serve Youth Treasurer in our Church, and I have learned many things from that experience including the value of teamwork and time management. For example, when we did fundraising for our youth branch, we (youth members) worked together as a team and be able to finish our task easily. It is easy to find yourself sitting at a cozy summer job, and not have to worry about doing anything too hard or responsible at all. However, when it came to my job at the Clearwater Sailing Center, I was immediately fascinated by the amazing opportunities that came my way. Nothing is more satisfying than helping someone overcome an obstacle that they have been longing to get past. Everyone can say that they always imagined or wanted to look up to someone whether if the person was famous or related to them. Throughout my teenage day I’ve always wanted someone to mentor me and show me things in life that I can one day use in the future years to come. I didn’t want a mentor that was a few years older I always wanted someone that was almost twice my age, maybe even older than me. My mentor that I will be talking about name is James. James and I met at my job throughout my time working there I have worked with many managers.…

My favorite job by far has been my internship as a career mentor in the Office of Career Development at my school. As a career mentor, my primary duties are to help students with resume/cover letters, job/internship search and just general life goals questions. This internship has made realize why I love working with students. It’s such a great feeling when a student comes and they may be confused about their major or how to make a resume for a job; but by the end of the your time with them, you just see this light bulb go off in their head and they have this look of “I understand”. Even though it may be a very small interaction, I feel like I have made a small difference in their lives and I have helped them somehow.…

There are approximately 397,000 children in foster care in the United States of America currently and I used to be one of them. However, foster had not even been near the forefront of my mind that summer. The summer before I started my first year of high school, I had plenty of anxiety about the tall tale I invented in my own mind that stood before me. Stories about how hard high school were numerous and often regaled on the crowded bus ride home by high schoolers who seemed to have the knowledge of every wise teacher in history combined. which that scared me to death; I had always held my position as a good student who followed the rules of my middle school.…

I never could have guessed five years ago, when I walked onto the MWBC grounds that my world would change forever. I didn’t know it then, but that cozy little patch of land in the middle of nowhere would become the biggest influence in my life. I had no inkling that the people I would meet would become like a second family to me. If I had it wouldn’t have taken me so long to get there. Growing up I was very wary of summer camp.…

I would really love to be able to come and hang out with them and get to know them more. While this is a hope of mine, I have never told any of them that I would do it because I don't want to get their hopes up. Honestly, I wish they had a volunteer opportunity where we could come in and hang out with the youth as a whole or in smaller groups to continue the relationships. I don't think I would be able to say yes to mentorship just because of my schedule and I wouldn't want to let them down.…

As I walked up to the plate, I wiped the beads of sweat dripping from my head while I was looking at my 3rd base coach and he gave me the sign to wait to swing till after the first strike. I felt butterflies in my stomach as I stepped into the batters box. The first pitch was a strike and then the next three pitches were balls. The kid that batted in front of me had the same count count and he got a changeup down the middle and hit the ball to right field.…
