Ever since I was little I had helped my great aunt prepare for memorial day and the 4th of july. My sister and i would go the day before and help wash the garage, golf carts and porch during the afternoon. In the evening, i'd help my aunt fix macaroni and potato salad. the next morning two of my cousins would come and help set up tables, chairs and start making all of the other food.

Aunt Theresa's house doesn't have air conditioning. the doors and windows were always open and if there was company fans were running. I always loved how quiet it is at her house before the rest of my family arrives, when it's cool outside and the grass is still damp. Memorial Day and the 4th of July always used to be hanging out with my cousin, Cecilia,

She was sitting on the porch with our aunts watching us, she didn’t bring an extra change of clothes so she refused to partake in our battle. I started making my way over to the house, clothes dripping wet. Chandler followed me holding a water balloon behind his back. As soon as she seen us, she screamed and ran into the house. I ran into the house after her. Chandler didn’t want my aunt to murder him for sneaking in with a water balloon, so he stayed outside. I chased her into the living room and tackled her to the ground. She shoved me off of her and ran to the dining room, she fell into a chair and I sat down on her lap. She screamed like a had set her on fire the entire time, and my aunts laughed at us. After I had decided that I had tortured her enough, I changed into my dry clothing. My uncles came into the house and announced that we were getting ready to go for a golf cart ride. Lisa said that she would take me on a quad ride, or as Cody called it, “going four-wheeling.” We figured out who was going to ride together and all left together. While riding through the woods, Lisa and I found a muddy path. We went through it three times before we felt like going back up to the house. I had mud in my hair, on my face and my legs were covered up to my

After World War I the Germans were broken. This brokenness led to a void and a willingness to receive help from anyone. As the rest of Europe watched, Germany occupied several countries including France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands. Soon after Hitler formed the Third Reich and World War II started, the Germans invaded Poland in 1939 (Barnes & Noble XV).…

For me, this wednesday carries a special personal significance as I go through 7th grade. This previous wednesday was Veterans Day, an opportunity to thank those men and women who have served in the U.S. military. It would seem that Americans, and young people in particular, have a hard time relating to veterans, let alone celebrating them, and for good reason. Our culture today increasingly portrays veterans as a group of mostly conservative, uneducated, ornery white men afflicted by a variety of mental illnesses and unemployment. While problems such as mental illness and veteran unemployment are real, the stereotypes they perpetuate do not present an accurate illustration of the veteran population as a whole, which is made up of countless…

Veterans Day is a national holiday dedicated to making sure military veterans get the proper respect they are due, it is also a day for all Americans to remember the sacrifices made by the members of our armed forces, past and present. These sacrifices are the reason you are able to live where you want, buy what you like, and to even criticize the government publicly. To show appreciation for all soldiers, Congress, at the urging of veterans service organizations, amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting in its place the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation (Public Law 380) on June 1, 1954, November 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. The day started as a celebratory event…

When walking through a cemetery, one often sees thousands of names engraved on the headstones. To a stranger, one name, quote, or date may mean nothing; however, to someone that knew them, it may be a link to the memories of a friend, family member, or loved one’s life. Like headstones, memorials connect us to the memories of a past person, or perhaps an event. From November 1st, 1955 to April 31st, 1975, war waged as the United States partnered with South Vietnam and fought against the communist regime of North Vietnam and its southern allies in the Vietnam War. A total of about 3 million people were killed, about 58,000 of whom were Americans.…
