My time working with the physical therapist made me realize that if I had only known more about my body and how it works than I most likely could have prevent the majority of the pain and suffering I had overcame. This experience also got me thinking there are probably more people like myself that have gone through injuries or illnesses that could have been preventable. Being at Morningside College gave me the opportunity to work on several research projects involving the importance of healthy living such as testing how microbial infested U.S. paper money is and discovering that most colleges and universities healthcare clinics in the area did not know exactly what HPV was nor how often women should have PAP smear exams. I also had a chance to collect respiratory data on multiple groups on campus with a group of peers. These experiences allowed me to develop important skills such as working with others, prioritizing tasks, and learning how to interpret data. While in college I sought opportunities to help others and combine my interest in science and wellness by working for a local hospital in the rehabilitation department as a technician. A traveler taps the side of the vehicle to board, pays, rides and then taps to jump off at a desired destination. For one particular man who sat with his face covered by a towel, that destination was the Diegue clinic in Port-au-Prince. All I knew from intake was that this patient was here for a foot issue. For the first week, my clinical objective was to participate in interprofessional team communication and collaboration. Being a student it can often be daunting to go out on a limb to put yourself out there and incorporate yourself as part of the team. This week the experience I encountered which helped me reach my clinical objective was quite adrenaline-charged. Upon having a patient return from their dialysis treatment they were found unresponsive by my preceptor and I. Being able to communicate with my preceptor on the next steps of activating the rapid response team (RRT) as well as getting more hands on deck was a big step and definitely a different role than that of just a student nurse.…

As medical treatment become more available in our community my grandma was able to receive the care she needed without having to travel fifty miles or more.
