McKeesport isn't one of the greatest places to live. In fact, it’s probably one of the worst in Allegheny County. After the decline of the Pittsburgh-region’s steel industry and the influx in gang activity, McKeesport became a cesspool of death, poverty, and demoralization. I moved to McKeesport when I was three.

Growing up, McKeesport was always a depressing and discouraging environment. Buildings were abandoned almost daily, and as a result, empty lots sprawled over the city like weeds in gardens. Dark clouds had permanent residents in the sky, no matter the season. News of violent deaths were commonplace, and every time one was announced, you only hoped and prayed it wasn’t someone you knew. For almost half of my life, that environment was an aspect of my very being.

My best option was to take part in the Gifted program, but that was still not a very good option as the program and the teachers only had the funding to provide so much. After five years in McKeesport and several years in the public school system, my parents were fed up and made one of the best decisions in my life. They enrolled me in a program called FAME (Fund for the Advancement of Minorities through Education) which helped me get into a private school in Sewickley, a very affluent town. Later, they provided the support and coaching necessary for me to get into the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Young Scholars

The midst of an abandoned metropolis. The concrete in front of her was cracked and blades of grass grew everywhere from it. Jane's every footfall echoed boundlessly. Towering skyscrapers rose all around, but the glass was gone from their windows and the ominous creaking from all sides made her very glad there was no wind. She felt sure that the slightest…

Prologue The enigmatic sky was as black as tar, rain fell heavily across the pessimistic city from swirling grey clouds. Blue flashes of lightning struck the tops of towering derelict skyscrapers. Hundreds and thousands of buildings jumbled together in a massive multitude of disarray. Deep in the crevices of the city, in a small dark alley stood two figures, watching each other in contemplative silence.…

The alleys were eerie in the late November nights, barely lit by a single streetlight that only seemed to light up a single 6ft space. Now, there were no street lights at all, and barely anything to call an alleyway. Buildings were burnt, whole sides taken out, and the buildings gutted, leaving nothing but rusted metal and scrap pieces of paper. Boots pattered along the abandoned sidewalk with stern purpose. From their shoes to their heads they were covered with clothing, keeping the harsh winds from blowing handfuls of dust into their eyes.…

Pittsburgh is not my hometown of 2,587 people. Pitt is not my high school of 1,243 students. The Pitt Class of 2021 will certainly not be my high school graduating class of 323 students. Everything about Pitt is new for me, entirely out of my comfort zone, and that is how I know that Pitt is the right choice for me.…

Growing up, I lived in quite a few places as a result of my parents’ divorce. The neighborhood I lived most of my life, and still live in, is in New Market, Maryland. I live with my father on a tranquil golf course surrounded by large evergreens, close to a large lake known as Lake Linganore. I have always loved living here, especially when the wind would pick up and breeze through the trees and the crisp blades of the manicured grass. My favorite activity is to walk with my dog along the golfing path, and observe the scenery of the landscape with the forested mountains along the horizon.…

Thankfully, I don’t have any life changing events that drastically affected the way I live and breathe, but I wouldn’t say I live a perfect life. I was born in Brooklyn, New York, and went to school there until the Summer of ‘14. Before then, I would rarely go to school due to overall laziness which caused my grades to take a toll. My mother, of course was disappointed in my behavior willing to send me to boarding school or something if she really had to . Little did I know, I was treading on thin ice.…

Mifflinburg, Pennsylvania, home to roughly 3,500 people including myself. This town can be described by the frequently said phrase, “everyone knows everyone”. With most small towns I always complained that there was nothing to do, but something about Mifflinburg still draws in people from all over. During December we have a Christkindl Market, where many people show off their talents with carvings, crafts, candles, and festive food. I have gone to this market for as many years as I can remember and it is something the town as a whole looks forward to.…

In the summer before my first year of middle school, my family and I packed our bags and relocated in central Ohio, an urban area that I grew up knowing but never understood much about. Moving from my hometown in the country was difficult for me since I’ve grown close and comfortable with my life there, and the thought of leaving it was frightening. Nevertheless, my stubborn opinions soon alternated once I started school in the fine suburban area called Dublin. I have heretofore never met such a group of warm, welcoming teachers and students. I formed friendships with numerous new peers in the first few weeks, and my group expanded significantly as the weeks progressed.…

When I was eight years old, I moved from Manchester, MA to Fort Mill South Carolina. For the first five years, I absolutely hated it there and I despised my parents for making me move there. The first few years were rough; I felt like I didn’t fit in because I was from the north and I couldn't understand half of my teachers because of their thick southern accents. I struggled to make friends and couldn't wait to move to somewhere new someday By the time I was a freshman, my attitude changed; I fell in love with the place. I had popular in my grade, I had straight A’s…

In movies, shows and songs, children and teenagers stereotypically hate their hometown. They rebel and are always searching for an adventure that brings them outside of the confines of the town that they have grown up in. For me, growing up in Roseland, New Jersey, was not like that at all. My hometown of three square miles was the perfect place to spend my childhood and formative years. Since I spent the majority of my life living in such close quarters with everyone in the town, very quickly the people and town instilled the values that I live by into me and shaped me into the person that I am today.…
