Gladiator

Boom! Clap! As the sound dissipates my head stops throbbing like a fish squirming on the ground. My vision gets clearer as I start getting my strength back. The dungeon that I'm in smells like a dumpster. Old victim’s skeletons draped across the floor. Dried blood smeared across the walls. Not the best room that I've been in but, it could be worse. I look down on my tattered clothes to see my hands chained with weights on them. My stomach is heaving for food. I couldn't even remember when I had an actual good meal. I look around to see a rat scurry across the floor trying to escape as my foot smashes down on the rat's head with a crack. It didn't look delicious but it's the only food I had. So, I swallowed down the rat

BELIEVE IT OR NOT, we're all accustomed to a certain standard, or stereotype that needs to be played. Whether it's being captain of the cheerleading team or the smartest kid in your class, it's one way or another that's there's going to be someone who's supposed to follow by these stereotypes or standards just for the sole fact that that's them. Unfortunately for me, it couldn't get any worse, since being an African American female who unfortunately does not fit your typical, "angry black woman." Yes, that "angry black woman", bitter, closed-off, unarticulated, with serious father issues.…

I was sitting in the front right section of the house if you could even call it that anymore. The once-white carpet was now covered with blood. The glass and dirt from picture frames, vases, lamps, potted plants and the TV mixed with the blood forming into a cohesive mat that now covered the floor. Beyond that, the light brown coloration of hardwood floor was now tainted with bloody footprints. These footprints lead towards that very pool of blood and vomit where I had woken from the night before.…

Yesterday, I was so inspired to read, my body sprung out of bed to see what I would learn. The unfortunate part is, I discovered that my computer was left at work and the use of pen and paper became relevant. After reading The Book of Matthew, chapter 2, I smiled and took notes. From the East Three wise men traveled to Bethlehem to worship baby Jesus, born King of the Jews.…

Two figures sat in a dark gray van: in the driver's seat was a tall dark haired man and in the passenger seat a small, thin girl. The girl's head was covered with a fuzzy knitted had to hide the fact that it was completely void of hair underneath. Her eyes were shining with excitement and anticipation as she sat in her seat fidgeting with a huge toothy smile spread across her face. Today would be the first time she had left the hospital in weeks. When the car stopped the girl bounded out the door with a speed that belied her illness.…

Reality has now hit me as I realise that I have devastated this life for my loved ones and I. Frustratedly, I clench the dust covered crack wanting my mistakes to release their claustrophobic grip. The rusted dripping sink counts down the seconds to the end of my sentence as a symbol of how this place has gotten the better of me. The walls are becoming darker and darker with every struggled breath i take, and the floor is now covered in the red remains that will soon be the last memory of me. I can faintly hear the CO’s batons tapping against the stiff iron bars in which sounds like the cell next to me.…

It is a melancholy Object to those, who walk through this great Town, or travel in the Country, when they see the Streets, the Roads, and Cabin-Doors, crowded with La Pest, forced to employ all their time in strolling, to beg for Sustenance. The men and women carrying the disease try to leave their dear native country to fight for the cure in Spain, or sell themselves to the Barbadoes. I think it is agreed by all Parties, that this prodigious number of Children, in the arms of ones who carry the disease or carry the disease themselves is in the present deplorable state of the Kingdom. As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many Years, upon this important Subject, and maturely weighed the several Schemes of other Projectors, I have…

The rain began to softly drip onto the girl ’s unkempt black hair as she walked along the weather-beaten sidewalk. Only a few rays of sun pierced the gray sky. A few cars passed by on the road; an old rusted Ford truck, a white minivan, and a shiny car with a green “Sheriff” across its doors. All three cars pulled into the school parking lot.…

Time stands still, frozen like New York in the wintertime. And all I can hear is the fast da dum da dum of my palpitating heart. Adrenaline spikes in waves through my clammy body. I look straight at the brown wooden door in front of me and pretend it is the audience. Taking a deep breath of the musky air, I envision myself bold and confident.…
