Personal Narrative: Marvin Varsity Dance Team

Improved Essays
Dance is a sport I am very passionate about as I have been dancing for fifteen years. In sixth grade I decided I wanted to be a part of my school’s dance team to spread school spirit and entertain crowds during the halftime of football and basketball games. I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Dance Teams for seven years, and I have made many friendships and memories that will last forever from being a part of such a wonderful athletic team. Dance team has taught me a great deal about teamwork, dedication, and hardwork. Each of the four years that I have been a member of the Marvin Ridge Varsity Dance Team, we have qualified for the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Florida. Our 2016-2017 squad will be going to the National …show more content…
Each season, our team volunteers at the Isabella Santos 5K for Kids Cancer. During my Freshman year, our team collected and delivered board games to the Levine Children’s Hospital. In my Sophomore year, our team organized for a basketball game to be dedicated to the Isabella Santos Foundation for Childhood Cancer to raise money for the foundation, and we donated pet supplies to Feline Urgent Rescue and Rehab which is a cat shelter for homeless cats to stay while waiting for their forever home. My junior year, our team again dedicated a basketball game to the Isabella Santos Foundation. The Isabella Santos Foundation was created to raise funds for children’s cancer research and is very important to the dance team because of our close relationship with the Santos family. Prior to that game, I organized and ran a Mini Mav Dance Clinic to raise money for the Isabella Santos Foundation for Childhood Cancer. I hand delivered flyers to each of the three elementary schools in the area, designed t-shirts, and choreographed as well as taught a routine to the participating children to perform at the halftime of a Marvin Ridge Varsity Basketball game. Although it will be difficult to say goodbye to dancing for the Marvin Ridge Varsity Dance Team, I am excited to audition for a collegiate dance team. I plan to audition for the East Carolina University Dance Team in hopes to continue my passion for dance

This year I was involved in planning the annual blood drive for my school. This activity was time consuming as it involved a lot of planning. I knew that I had to work hard in order for the event to be a success. I also had to utilize some of my leadership skills in order to make the event happen. When I talked to my school’s National Honor Society, I told them why we need people to help us.…

The short interview with Lauren Anderson is so inspiring that gives me an insight into passion and success as well as motivates me to persist in following my dream. Anderson’s story of her career as a principal ballerina seems quite simple and typical as she started early at seven, soon became a principal dancer of Houston Ballet, and then now is giving back to the society by teaching ballet to children of “underserved” community. However, I believe behind that story are all strenuous efforts and untiring perseverance along with her outstanding talent that kept her lifelong dream alive and made it come true. I can feel in her a great passion for the ballet career in every word she said and every story she told. Because ballet is hard and highly…

For the last two years, I have contributed to my Advanced Women’s Show Choir’s success as a performer and as a dance captain. My talent as a dancer and my ability to quickly learn choreography led to my selection as dance captain. This leadership role requires me to be a responsible person, a patient teacher and a supportive team member. Being a part of a nationally top-ranked show choir, I know the requirements of my role, and I was always thrilled to be selected as a dance captain during my junior and senior years. As dance captain, I schedule and lead dance sectionals, helping the girls review the choreography from previous rehearsals.…

During my senior year in high school, my friend Jonathon George and I created a charity event called Hoops for the Cure. This event was made to acquire donations for members of the school population battling cancer. In days leading up to the event, students would travel to businesses asking for contributions for the cause. During school, offerings were also accepted in a drop off box. The main event was a basketball game between the Hempfield High School men’s team versus the Rec All Stars.…

What do you consider to be your most meaningful contribution to Colleges Against Cancer during the 2015-16 year? I think I consider my participation in Relay for Life event as the most meaningful contribution that I have made to Colleges Against Cancer during the school year. I was not able to attend Tuesday meetings especially on winter quarter because of a job I had that needed me on Tuesday nights. However, this did not hinder me to constantly communicate to my other committee members. When time permitted this spring, I actively participated during Tuesday meetings, some of the flyering weeks, the production for Relay props, and the event itself.…

As part of an old high school tradition, hundreds of students crowded into a dimly lit cafeteria and danced until the air hung heavy and sweat glistened off every square inch of exposed skin. The schools that began the tradition of the modern homecoming dance most likely did not expect it to evolve into what it is today; at some point, we, as students, lost the true purpose of the event and instead became preoccupied with image. Even though I would have liked to think that those things did not matter, I still found myself altering my appearance that Saturday night to try and show off the best version of myself. I was not alone; other females joined me amidst a pile of cosmetic products and styling tools, and we had the pictures to showcase…

In high school, there are so many organizations to choose from. From swimming to DECA, football to choir, dance to basketball, and the list can go on and on. Hi Ms. Pierce, Hope you had a wonderful break and a nice day, The word I would use to describe my break is deciphering because I got a break from dance and school. For example, I was able to sleep to try to avenge the early wakings during school days and early dance practices. In addition to that, I had nothing to be concerned about. Having a break from both school and dance gave me time to think about myself and what I wanted for my future; besides, I was able to unwind. The time I had was crucial to me because sometimes in the middle of all the activities in the year I have no time to think.…

At some point in every person's life, they will have a special experience that will stick with them forever. One of my most memorable moments happened recently at a home volleyball game against Traverse City West. Approaching freshman volleyball season, the upperclassman spoke highly of the importance of overpowering TC West. As a ninth grader, I had the mindset that I would be playing for the freshmen team. I didn't think it really mattered what the outcome of the game would be, since we were only ninth graders.…

I pulled up my pretty pink tights, slipped into my ballet slippers and straightened my favorite black leotard. I fastened my hair up in the tightest bun I could handle, and layered on the most elaborate stage make up. It suddenly hit me that this was the last time I would be doing this ritual. For I was primping and prepping for my last performance as a member of the dance company. I had devoted my entire childhood to dance and finally the curtain was about to close.…
