“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become” – C.G Jung During the Summer of 2014, I experienced a small mental breakdown. I could not control my emotions or feelings. My whole life was spinning out of control and I had nothing to hold on to. My regular activities and support systems were slowly failing to keep me afloat. It felt like I was being slowly submerged under water with no help. Going out in public was a terrifying aspect and I couldn’t stay still. When my life started to look bleak, I was able to seek help from many mental health professionals that helped me learn that I was suffering with generalized and social anxiety disorder. I was able to see how different techniques and theories were being used in my therapy sessions. These helpful mental health professionals, heightened my passion to become a marriage and family therapist. Since this experience, my decision to become a Marriage and Family Therapist was solidified.

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

The Latino community has been generalized to seem as though access to proper mental healthcare has been a fault on their part, yet others argue that their approach to mental health may not be the only reason or a valid reason at all. Research has demonstrated that other factors have heavily contributed to the plight of a Latino’s mental well-being, instead. These factors vary across a spectrum for each Latino, such as whether or not they uphold cultural ideals; their background; their status; and their access to insurance or services.
