I didn't just have one world growing up, I had many. My family had to move several times because my father was in the military. I attended five different schools by the time I was in seventh grade. I knew Red Lobster was a bad option. I wanted to go to Outback Steakhouse, but mom had her way, even on MY high school graduation. I was stuck, sitting in the booth, waitress staring at me for 15, 16, 17 seconds now. Sitting in my cap and gown, she asked again – “where are you going to college?” I’d prefer the Bloomin’ Onion to this any day of the week.…

Through my four years in high school, one of the toughest classes I faced was AP biology. The rigorous course involved an intense 48 chapter lesson plan with a 2 hour AP exam at the end of the school year. Near the end of my junior, I was skeptical of taking this class, as I heard from my fellow classmates that the class was difficult to earn a decent grade. With this in mind, I began preparing for the class over the summer by reading the textbook, and practicing using the workbook. As I read the book, I became deeply interested in this subject.…

12-24 Are you KIDDING me?!?! OK, so, today was like, the worst day ever for me. First of all, my 6 year old twin sisters, Allison and Annie, ate the last 2 cranberry muffins this morning, broke the star on the top of my Christmas tree, and spilled my push pin jar next to my bulletin board, which I didn’t realize until I sat on one. Also, tomorrow is Christmas, and I have only 2 presents under the tree.…

Over the years, chaos has become my calm. Silence has become unsettling; silence usually means that mischief is afoot. This is all thanks to my cousin Kayla. Kayla was diagnosed with autism when she was two years old, after my aunt and uncle noted that Kayla wasn't developing the way an average two-year-old does. She didn't talk, avoided eye contact, and preferred to spend her time playing with silverware rather than her sisters.…

Growing up in New York City in the late 1990s wasn’t easy. In the midst of risks, such as gang violence and racism, growing up in an immigrant family was a never-ending journey of developing resilience against constant adversities. Growing up in two distinct cultural settings that emphasizes contrasting values, traditional conformity versus individualistic freedom, made you question how you defined yourself, in terms of not only cultural identity, but also your fit in society. Last year, I showed my parents a new television series called “Fresh Off the Boat,” which describes the childhood of Eddie Huang and his family, immigrants from Taiwan. Wanting to learn more of my childhood, I asked my parents if their experiences as immigrants were…

The Fish of One Thousand Casts Ever since I was little I had dreamed of catching a Muskie. I had caught several species of fish, anywhere from a little bluegill in a nearby pond, to a red snapper while deep sea fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. More than once I've had to dive for cover in the green, slimy muck of a pond. I doubt I would have ever picked up the sport of fishing if I knew it required dodging golf balls, but this is the type of fishing I love. While I don't remember the first time I went fishing, I've seen pictures of my dad and me dangling a line of the pier, standing in mountain streams and side by side in the surf. Nevertheless, I cannot actually remember fishing. However, I do remember many years ago when I was invited to go with a friend and his dad on their boat, unfortunately, a late night storm blew in and much to my dismay, the trip was canceled.…
