Personal Narrative: Marching Band

"Good better best, never let it rest, 'till your good is better and your better is best." These simple words were spoken to me by my high school band director Cheldon Williams on the first day of my high school experience. This, followed by my experience of marching band and my eventual learning of piano sparked a period of introspective thought, and mental growth, that transcended to where I am today. Never in my life did I think my hard work and dedication inspired by Mr. Williams words would land me at Interlochen Center for the Performing Arts Boarding School. These words became a core part of what I am, and from freshman year on would encourage me to never set a limit on my potential, and my overall worth. I worked tooth and nail to succeed in my academics, piano and saxophone, and any goal I set my eyes on.

For public school, since freshman year, I had set my eyes on becoming woodwind captain for my school, J.P. Taravella, and making the all county jazz band. Through over 230 hours of marching band, and countless more hours improving saxophone, I had finally achieved both goals and continued to improve on my craft. This motto of good better best gave me the momentum to never stop trying to outdo myself, and this later also

The first week of being at this academy tested my pride, integrity, and mental strength in ways I thought weren't possible. Being one of the worst pianists here due to my lack of experience eroded me from the inside, and many times throughout the course of this experience, I felt like quitting. Self loathing ensued, and the words of my teacher kept me wanting to triumph, even under harsh circumstances. I know see the progress I have made by always trying my hardest and not thinking about what others may say if I fail in the progress. This motto is what I live by, and I will forever try my hardest in whatever goal I set my eyes

I was striving for an unattainable goal because I didn’t work towards any form of progression. On the other hand, being an instrumentalist has taught me the importance of daily goals, a good work ethic, and dedication. With that in mind, I am becoming more aware that music is not just the notes on an staff but also the zipping of a jacket and even the tumbling on a trampoline floor. I believe that my five year old self would be proud of who I am becoming because I have already completed my personal goals instead of lacking improvement in the shadows of someone…

In my small town of Centre, Alabama, I had no pride. I did not think our school had amazing programs or good representatives at events. All this changed when I joined the high school marching band. We practiced hard and worked without stopping. I soon realized that Cherokee County has pride in at least one program, their marching band.…

In junior high I was the low man on the totem pole and terrified of playing in front of people. I ended up being the last chair in eighth grade and decided then that even though I was not the best player, I could still practice and try to improve. By my freshman year, I had started gradually getting higher chairs in play tests. My sophomore year, I managed to get first chair in symphonic band and had my first solo in that year’s spring concert. That same year, I also tried out for all state band and district honor band where you have to learn twelve major scales, a melodic and harmonic scale, and the chromatic along with two prepared pieces of different styles, lyrical and technical.…

Wearing a heavy, uncomfortable uniform with a feathery plume strapped to my head while simultaneously playing an instrument and stomping around a football field does not sound very glamorous at a glance. However, this is how I chose to spend the majority of my Saturdays and Tuesday nights when I signed up for marching band. Enticed by the promise of a magical and musical trip to Disney, I had no idea what I had gotten myself into. I suffered through hours upon hours of music memorization and painstakingly trying to perfect my form and sync my steps to everyone else’s. The goal is to move as one, to melt into one band whose sounds and movements are precise, identical, and smooth.…

I’ve also spent many hours participating in concert band. The William Blount High School Band has not only helped me grow as a tuba player, but the band has also helped me grow as a person. What really caught my eye about this group in particular is the houses! It seems like such a good way to really bond with not only your Big, but with some of the other girls in the organization too. I was in band in high school, and I loved having a band little sister. I love how an organization like this takes that aspect of sororities but replaces the negative aspects of sororities with volunteering and academic standards. Additionally, while my high school was in Austin and many people from my school came to UT, I didn’t come with a solid friend group.…

Blues, classical, pop, and any other kind of music that caught my attention filled my head with notes of strife and peace, with passion and apathy, with every other emotion imaginable running amuck through the mind of a seventh grader. Noise filled the empty hours of everyday, and kept my mind occupied, which was my sole defense against the depressive thoughts trying to leach their cold fingers through my mind. Music started as an innocent hobby, but soon crept throughout my whole life. My first season with the Waterford Wildcat Pride Marching Band was doomed for failure from month one.…

When one masters the art of an instrument, his or her lifetime captures benefits. Throughout my high-school and middle-school career, I enjoyed playing the clarinet in band and developed a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Band has provided me with opportunities to develop new, but lasting friendships and has taught me how to interpret musical elements. My mentors challenged me to overcome boundaries and to master the art of playing the clarinet, which affected all aspects of my life. Not only did I learn to preserve when passages presented difficulty but also to multitask through reading notes, counting rhythms, watching the conductor, and playing dynamics.…

The fire of one’s fervor burns bright despite the unfamiliarity of a situation. One cannot reside in the comfort zone forever; a single secure flicker upon the wick of a candle offers little more than a moment’s distraction. Though I harbor a love for music and teaching, I oftentimes doubt my abilities, and such doubt was forced aside in my freshman year when I was encouraged to teach a handful of my peers to play trombone. Taking on the role of instructing other musicians forced me from cozy reservation and ignited in me a zeal for not only leading but for teaching and encouraging an audience.…
