Personal Narrative-Marching Band

Coming out of fifth grade, I didn’t know what music really was. It just seemed like a bunch of guys playing a plethora of notes in my opinion. But once I joined middle school band, that all changed. Sometime during sixth grade, I had the sudden epiphany that I need to pursue music for as long as possible, because it felt special. It still does. Though middle school taught me everything I needed to learn about music at the time, high school is the reason I’m writing this paper. Entering ninth grade as a five-foot-three biology know-it-all, Steve Conley, my current band teacher, introduced me to marching band. It’s some of the best fun I’ve had in a long while. The past two years of marching band have influenced to me to lead the band rather than just play. I want to be drum major. Anyone else who wants to be drum major is going to be against you. This year, anyone in the Clover Hill Band who’s a sophomore or older can audition. So far, only one person is competing against me: Loren Sims. She has her pros and cons, but I will admit she has one important trait that far surpasses my own: popularity. Popularity does not relate to the qualities of a good drum major, but significantly decides who will be voted for it. Loren is known for her warmth and kindness, which made her popular with many people, including band members. A drum major is elected by the vote of the band and Mr. Conley’s approval. Though Loren has annoyed Conley before, he still likes her as a person. He does like me too, but he would support Loren and me as drum major equally. If the band voted right now, voting would be close, sheerly because of the popularity vote. However, Loren lacks a few skills that I possess that could drive her away from the drum major
