Personal Narrative: Making It To The Big Time

Making It to the Big Time I am Vincent Crabtree. When I was a freshman in High School, I participated in an activity called “Winter Percussion”. It was much like marching band, but it took place during the winter and spring season, and it featured a smaller ensemble composed mostly of percussive instruments. Throughout the season, we had practice almost nightly, working to put together a show that would be performed in competition with other drumlines. One of my favorite memories begins after one of these practices. As the practice came to an end, our instructor called us all into a group. Nobody thought much of it, as we usually came together to hear announcements before going home for the night. This time, however, it was different. Our instructor told us that we had been chosen to be a part of a wonderful event, one which would take place in front of many people. Our minds raced, wondering what it could be, until he finally revealed the answer to us. We were to be part of the Super Bowl …show more content…
Was it really true that we would perform in such a big event? We all looked at our instructor, and his face was enough to tell us that this was no joke. He further explained that three other drumline would be joining us, and that we would begin practice at Center Grove High School in the coming month. When the time came, my friends and I eagerly step foot into a new band room, and perhaps our greatest musical journey began. For many weeks, we continued with business as usual, working to perfect our school’s show for competition. The thought of performing in the halftime show was a constant in the back of our heads, however, and as the first practice grew nearer, we grew more and more excited. What would it be like? Who would be in the show with us? These and many other questions floated around our craniums like frenzied fish in too small of a pond. We would not have to wait long, though, as the answers to our many questions were coming very

I remember my 10 year old self sitting in the stands at the very first Roosevelt Rough Rider football game of the 2007-2008 season, and half-time had just began. My sister was in the marching band so I sat there scanning the field for her, but couldn’t find her. I stood up and looked one more time until I saw her, standing tall on top of the drum major podium, calling the band to attention and putting her hands in position to begin conducting the band. I watched her, in awe of how her hands moved as they hit every beat, giving the band the tempo to the music.…

Ever since I joined band in 4th grade, people have been talking about how excited they were to join marching band. At band day in 5th and 6th grade, everyone else shared how they couldn't wait until they were a 9th grader and could finally be able to perform and play in the stands like we saw the marching band do many times. In 7th and 8th grade, we had a watered down version of marching band that only played two parades. While I was glad to get snare drum both years, the exhilaration was never there, and I came very close to not joining marching band. But against my will, I ended up auditioning for drumline in April and I got the cymbals.…

Memoir Rough Draft While everyone starts to complain about school starting, I was already at school before August for marching band. Day in and day out, all of us worked our hardest, having fun, helping out, and getting to know each other well. It was hot, many times over a hundred degrees, although sometimes it felt worse, as if we were getting baked in the warm sun rays. However, we were there for a purpose, and we all shared a common goal, a dream, to become better as a marching band. Of course we were exhausted, after long hours, but I owe my life to band for making me who I am.…

Throughout childhood, people try and find where they fit in, where they belong. I desperately tried to find my place by throwing myself into multiple activities, from sports to musical groups. I liked the majority of them, but nothing was as enjoyable as marching band. The image I have chosen is my marching band’s practice field. We like to call it our “dirt mound” due to the lack of flat ground, dying grass, and dirt ditches from the years of band camp.…

At 7:30 in the evening on Tuesday, October 4th, the Northern Michigan University music department’s Jazz band held a concert at Reynolds Recital Hall on campus. The music was surprisingly quite varied compared to what I had expected and the musicians were clearly talented. The entire performance was very impressive and it was neat to see fellow students performing and displaying such skill. Ultimately, I was glad to have attended the concert, despite the fact that I don’t particularly enjoy jazz music.…

On October 7th I attended a concert by the Auburn University’s very own Chamber Winds / Percussion & Symphonic Band. They performed 11 pieces altogether that were all met with enthusiastic applaud and commendation. The first piece that caught my attention was “Broken Clouds”, a piece composed strictly of percussions, specifically the marimba, vibraphone, and the darbuka. This piece caught my attention due to each instrument having its own solo portion in the piece with a synchronous medley of the trio during the transitions; as well as the Indian groove-oriented intentions of the piece itself.…

All I desired to do was join band and play drums, but I never realized that in doing so would result in anything more than just a recreational activity. As in every journey, we had to put in a great deal of hard work.…

On the 26th of February I attended a trio concert at the Dr. Bobbie Bailey & Family Performance center. The concert consisted of three musicians including Charae Krueger (cello), Robert Henry (pianist), and John Warren (clarinet). I arrived at the Morgan Hall around 8 o’clock, which was the start time for the concert. As I began to approach the hall, I knew that I was in for a treat. The hall itself carried a sense of professionalism, but also almost a welcoming note that made me feel comfortable attending.…
