Personal Narrative: Make It Work

“Make it work,” exclaims Tim Gunn, host of the hit show Project Runway, while designers scramble to reassemble a runway ready look worthy enough to display before the prestigious judges. I have never experienced the situation of completing a perfect ensemble in less than twenty four hours, but I have felt the pressure of starting from scratch with very little time to “make it work.” Last February, after precisely planning my track training regimen, I injured my leg. Indoor track season was fast approaching, and I was beginning to feel frustrated and defeated. However, after consulting with a doctor, I knew I could use my injury as motivation to work towards becoming healthy once again. The limited time frame acted as my catalyst to accelerate …show more content…
This position has helped me overcome the timidity I once felt, to becoming a strong and passionate leader. To enhance my leadership skills, I decided to volunteer as a basketball coach for third and fourth grade girls. I instructed them on how to train hard and about the importance of teamwork, while they taught me how to have fun with it at the same time. My favorite accomplishment as a coach was seeing the team score for the first time and watching them all celebrate for each other. Additionally, my growth as a leader has also helped me attain the position of co-secretary for National Honors Society. While occupying this role, I will continue to enhance my communication skills, along with servicing the society. Growing up in a supportive hometown has ingrained a sense of giving back to the community. While involved in the free summer lunch program at First United Methodist Church, I was educated about the economic struggles in my surrounding area. My eyes were opened to the alarming fact that many children in my local area do not have adequate nutrition during the summer months.. Following this positive experience through my church, I now volunteer my time on Sunday mornings to teach Sunday school. When I first started, I worried if the young students would listen and understand the lesson, or be more interested in snack time. …show more content…
This University embodies all aspects I seek in an institution. A small school of fewer than six thousand students, I see it as a perfect college fit for me both academically and spiritually. I intend to study human biology, with the hopes of being accepted into its highly ranked doctoral physical therapy program. This school is also affiliated with the United Methodist Church, which will grant a sense of “home” while I am three hours away. Additionally, I intend to run on the university's cross country and track team. This opportunity will nourish my love of running, and will also provide a tremendous support system on the course and in the classroom. The schedule of a student athlete is very rigorous with maintaining fatiguing practices, outstanding grades, and much needed sleep, but it will prepare me for life after college in a way that not every college student has the opportunity to know. I am overjoyed to become a Greyhound at the University of Indianapolis and see where it will lead me in my future.
I would be greatly honored to receive the JKKensil Honors English Award. I am deserving of this award because I will not only use my time wisely as a serious student at college, but I plan on investing time throughout volunteer organizations of the city. With this scholarship, I intend to begin my studies as a physical therapist, and start a whole new realm of unforgettable memories. Though the future

I would first like to thank Frostburg State University for accepting me in their institution and giving me the chance to further my education after my high school scholar years. I have enjoyed my time at Frostburg State University and with hard work I have been able to make the dean’s list and be accepted in the Honors program during the first semester of my freshman year. I hope to continue to work even harder during the second semester and throughout my school career. As a small university, Frostburg has enabled me to benefit from many things, such as the small size classes. Now that I have gotten used to college and life on campus, I believe it is time to continue to push myself to work harder and to attend an institution where I could be academically challenged and can be surrounded by many people who share my profession.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

“Congratulations!!” read one post on a friend’s Facebook wall, the day after she landed an office job in her field. “So amazing!” read another. “Are you ready for your big-girl job?” asked a third well-wisher, accompanied by a GIF of Amy Poehler as Leslie Knope. “I can’t believe I finally have a real job” was the text she sent me a few days later, from the comfort of her desk, where she had been hired to do operations work for an organization she had once, a few years prior, interned for.…
