Since the beginning of my freshman year I have been actively a part of a club known as Make-A-Wish; which strives to grant the wishes of terminally ill children with life threatening diseases. This club offered me not only a chance to fit into a new school, but also do what I love and do best, help people. I not only learned the purpose of helping others, but I also learned a lot about myself. Through determination, hope, and hard work I have pushed through the problems to bring back the reason for this club; making a difference. Finally, after being appointed to our new positions the wish kids spoke to us about their dreams coming true. I will never forget about the time one kid told us how amazing it was to finally travel when he’s never been on a plane or how one girl got to spend the entire day with her favorite Disney princesses. Since attending Spelman College, I have evolved as a person mentally and socially, especially in my efforts regarding volunteering and the production of social change. Before attending Spelman and joining Lady Buds, a mentoring program for young underprivileged girls, I understood to a degree, how social change impacts people and their communities. However, after being a part of Lady Buds, my understanding of social change vastly increased, specifically how it affects the communities within Atlanta and on a larger scale our society. Upon entering Spelman college, I knew I wanted to be involved with a mentoring group, and while there was a multitude of groups to choose from, I decided on Lady Buds because their mission statement resonated with my goal before entering Spelman College.…

As a member of the Inside Ride Organizing Committee at Mentor College, I assisted to organize, advertise and execute the 2015 Inside Ride cycling event that raised over $50,000 for childhood cancer patients and advancing research. The Inside Ride is an annual fundraising event that my school, Mentor College, has every year in memory of a student who passed away battling cancer in 2010. Having known that student, I felt a deeper connection to the cause and and joined this committee to help raise awareness for childhood cancer and contribute to the success of this event. The event took several months of planning to ensure that everything would run smoothly. Every Life Matters I really only started understanding the meaning of abortion once one of my mom’s friends had one. Before that I had very little knowledge about abortion. My parents have always taught me to stand by what I believe and that others may have different beliefs. They always told me that I would meet people that would disagree with me and what I believe not only when it came to these kind of topics but many other things as well. Being told that, they told me to always respect people’s beliefs and their points of view because everyone has the right to stand by what they believe, just like I do.…

I have a strong passion for helping anyone and everyone I can, and helping the incoming sixth graders (and other new students) of next year is a new and exciting way for me to give back to my community the way the WEB leaders two years ago did when I felt like I didn’t belong. Over the years, I’ve done a variety of things to pass on the love and lessons everyone in my community has given me, and learned to find my way through middle school after my own diagnosis of a heart condition two months ago.…

Dressed in a simple sari and covered in blood, an unfamiliar woman rushed into my house desperately searching for my grandfather, the only physician in a forty mile radius. The next few moments brought chaos and generated quite the interest in our usually quiet village of Aklacha in Gujarat, India. Immediately, my grandmother quickly sent my cousin and I into our room and told us to stay there until they handled a “situation” at the neighbor’s house. As any adrenaline-pumped, curious-minded child would do, I began questioning my cousin and when I got no answers, I decided to sneak out the front door. By the time I reached my neighbor’s house, there was a sizable crowd outside.…
