Personal Narrative: Living In A Land Called America

Improved Essays
Something that goes unnoticed in my life is how hard my parents and I persevere to live in the land called “America.” It goes unnoticed in my life because I’ve lived with them my whole life and I don’t really think how important it really is. People, including myself, take everything in life for granted. We complain about everything from school to the food on dinner table. What we do not realize is that there are kids living in poverty, whether it be in third world countries or simply the neighborhood a few blocks away, do not even have the opportunity to go to school or even have the choice of dinner because of their poor finances. My parents came to the United States in the late 1990’s as study-abroad students. They came so that they could …show more content…
They ended up staying in the United States after my birth. My father was still in school so my parents both began to work at a beauty supply store in downtown Milwaukee. With paying back my father’s school loans along with the costs of raising a child and paying the bills, living in “America”, the land of opportunity, was not better or easier than life in Korea. I didn’t know at the time since I was innocent and unaware but as I was growing up, we were very impoverished. My parents struggled to pay the bills. Since I was an only child, my parents centered their attention on me and tried to give me everything I wanted. If I had known our financial situation, I never would have asked for the things that I have recieved in my short lifetime. The epitome of my parent’s financial struggles was when my mother was pregnant with my sibling. My mother had to work because of how poor we were so instead of resting during her pregnancy, she worked. It ultimately led to a miscarriage. In the summer of 2010, my father finally received a job offer from the Black Hills State University of South Dakota. I was bullied and harassed for being Korean during my one year living there. I went through a stage of …show more content…
I want to be able to give back the love my parents have shown for me. If my father had kept his professor job in South Dakota, my parents would have been stable. Instead due to my circumstances, my father gave up his dream job and is now studying in ministry. Simply put, my parents threw away their financial stability just for my sake. I’m glad to have had the push and support from my parents. Not a lot of people know of the sacrifices my parents have made which is why I want to get into a great institution like Madison and make them never regret the sacrifices that they have made for me. If I am accepted into a great institution like Madison, it will help me reach my goal of obtaining a well-paying job, which I can then use to pay back my parents for the astounding love they have shown me throughout the course of my life. At Madison, I can receive an amazing education for a reasonable price that my family can

My expectations before participating in this activity was for it to not be as authentic as it was. I did not realize that there was a place downtown that had such real and good food and wondered why I haven’t heard of this place before. Also, I was surprised with the poverty I saw around the area. I have always grown up in areas that have a decent amount of money and have never been to a spanish speaking country or area before. This experience really opened my eyes to the fact that there are places out there that still have authenticity and still try to resist becoming “Americanized” in society.…

Despite only being six years old when my parents decided it was time to leave everything behind and come settle to a foreign land, the struggles that we underwent as a family in the United States, have marked not only me, but my loved ones for life.
