Personal Narrative: Link Servant Leader

Improved Essays
A leadership experience that had a positive influence in other students lives and my life was having the opportunity to be chosen as a link crew leader. As a link crew leader I participated in organizing the freshman orientation, getting assigned a group of freshman to do activities with, and throughout the year visit a freshman classroom and do activities with them. Those activities varied, disguised as exciting games, they were actually great metaphors for skills that they could apply to high school and through life. I wanted to make this the best orientation ever for them and I wanted to make them feel comfortable because I knew what it was like to be in their positions, I was just as anxious and out of place as they were.

I want to be a Link Crew Leader because I would love to be able to mentor freshman as my previous Link Crew Leaders did to me. I also feel that becoming a Link Crew Leader would not only allow me to help shape freshman to become better people but to help me become a better person myself. I have been both a volunteer at a summer program for first and second graders and an assistant coach for the special needs program at Alta Loma Little League. At the summer program I was tasked with teaching 3 classes of first graders to type and code. This leadership position not only taught me how to actively communicate with people who learn in different ways, but also taught me to become a stronger leader.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

Trudging through damp, snake infested grass, I reached down and started to collect hundreds of cans, wrappers, and other miscellaneous trash items. As I walked through this filthy lot, I realized how different this area of Rockford, Illinois was from my home town. With the help of over 200 workers, including myself, we were able to change the face of many people's lawns and hopefully inspire the house owners to change their habits forever. The club I am involved with at school that allowed me to participate in project 10-13, the annual cleaning of an area of Rockford, is Servant Leadership.…

Another time that I have taken a leadership role is when our sideline cheer team had a booth at the Water Festival. I took the morning shift and when I got there I had all of the materials but only me and my coach had shown up and she still had to head back to the school to get the things we were selling. So while she went and got the stuff I stayed at the booth and lead it by myself until my teammates came and helped. I decided to be a leader in this situation because I knew that it was what I had to do to help my coach out so that she could get her stuff done. I believe that by leading the booth for a few hours I helped my coach accomplish what she had to do for the day and helped my team by sitting at the booth fundraising to help pay for some of our debts.…

When I was in the first grade, I was considered a goody two-shoes because I followed all the rules and got good grades, but I never really believed that I deserved the nickname until one day on the playground. I began to wonder, are we allowed to sing outside during recess?…

My leadership experience began when my supervisor and his colleagues had an important meeting to attend and had no one sitting in on the office for intake office hours, so he asked me and another intern, Isaiah, to sit in from 9 AM-3PM. My supervisor taught us the main component of this position in 10 minutes. At first, I was nervous because I was new to the agency and it was my first time performing front desk duties. But after a couple of clients I began to get more comfortable and confident with the process because I had performed similar duties when I was in my cubicle. At this moment I felt like I was a leader because I was put in a position where I had minimum training, but still could take control of the office duties, and according to my supervisor, my performance level was beyond expectations.…
