Personal Narrative: Life Lessons Learned In Football

Your first year of playing football is always the best. This is when you decide what kind of player you want to be and not only that, but you decide what kind of person football is going to make you. Starting to play football in 5th grade was the best decision of my life. At first you think that the sport is just for the fun of it. But every year I’ve played football my coach will tell me the same thing even when it is a different coach every year; “I’m not here to make you into the best football player possible. I am here to make you into the best man that you can be. The life lessons learned in football will follow me for the rest of my life. My coach in 9th grade, Coach Hayes, was the first coach that I had that expected greatness out of me. He singled me out from the rest of the receivers at the Woodlands High School by picking on me and also encouraging me. I figured out why he was doing this; he saw something in me that told him that I could someday be a great player, but even more than that I could be that best that I could be. My favorite Coach I’ve ever had is actually my current coach, Coach Larry Harvey. Coach Harvey is your classic Texas high school coach, he is hard on you and he cares about you. Coach Harvey has pushed on me and pushed on me until the point that I’m ready to quit. But of course I won’t quit because I want to learn from him as much as I can. You know you have a good coach when he sincerely tells you that he loves you. Coach Harvey has told us since day one that he plans to make our team into men and I know he will succeed in this.
