Personal Narrative: Life In The Buckley Household

Improved Essays
It is coming up on a very important time in the Buckley household. A date of celebration that is far more outstanding by anything we had ever experienced as a family unit to date. The date of this celebration is October the 1st. “Is it a Birthday?” you may ask. While it is not a Birthday of any human living in the Buckley household, it can be considered a Birthday of sorts. It is the Birthday of our better life. You see, this October 1st will mark three years since we moved to the city of Cresco, Iowa. Some people move around all the time and would tell me “It isn’t such a big deal”. The truth of the matter is though that it is a huge deal to me. We will reflect back here to when I was born. I was born on November 12, 1997 to Bruce and Caryn Buckley in Berwyn, Illinois. Berwyn, Illinois can be described as a predominantly Blue Collar, Catholic, Democratic, Mexican neighborhood. When my Dad was born in 1960, Berwyn was a very different place. It was full of nice middle class families. While much of that, and very nice architecture remains, the people now make some parts of the city feel like a ghetto. Our little part was still fairly decent but outside of that it could get quite questionable. With all of that and the dreaded High School, I was ready to leave Berwyn. My Dad though was not and I can understand why. He had lived his entire life in Berwyn up until that point (52 years), and his Mom had lived there her whole life (1934-1994), and her …show more content…
The biggest accomplishment of mine was my loss of almost 120 pounds. I was about 310 pounds when we moved here and now I’ am right around 190 pounds. I feel so much better, and I really feel that I improved my personal health. I have made so many wonderful new friends since I moved here. Even during my first day of school here, they were all quick to introduce themselves, and it was a great feeling

The bombshell Toby dropped last evening consumed my thoughts for hours into the night. Why the Angelic Counsel left out vital information regarding the prime suspect and the victim’s best friend was a mystery to me. The fact that they had a child together blew me away. I stayed up late only going to bed in the early hours of the morning, revisiting the data I had previously read, but with a fresh perspective.…

Growing up in a working class home, I quickly gained the skills of an environmentalist, entrepreneur, and civics leader. I can still recall the smell of the flowering fruit trees of the summer months in sunny South Florid and how every year I would gather the abundance of extra fruit in our backyard and distribute them to our extended family, friends, and neighbors. In our modest home, nothing was ever thrown away, and items would be recycled many times. At the age of nine I was serving hot coffee and small pastries at the walk-up window of the small Cuban café my parents owned. As the United States prepared to celebrate its bicentennial, in the afternoons with a small booklet in hand, I drilled my mother test questions to prepare her for the…

Growing up as a young man my mother would always share with my brother and I her life lessons. At some point we were just hearing a broken record “the only thing you should be afraid of is god” ,“ always be honest and respectful” , “be an active listener” etc.. . However, we understood that the reason she would tell us these life lessons was to help us in life and do things she only wish she could have done. This is similar to most kids living in West New York.…

When asked about my racial and ethnic background, often I find myself baffled as to how to respond accordingly. I categorize myself as a second generation American, as my mother and I were both born in the United States, yet some how if I say just that, I feel like I am withholding from the truth. My paternal grandparent emigrated from the Dominican Republic and immigrated to the United States in their adolescence years. Because they acculturated quickly, they entered the work force and learned English. Though, they knew the importance of learning the English language, they also knew they wanted to keep some of their original traditions.…

The only indication that he was still alive was the shallow movement of his chest, going up and down, up and down as he laid on the small bed in our family room.
