Personal Narrative: Level 5-Day Old Baby Girl

Decent Essays
During my last clinical day, I was in the level 2 nursery and I worked with a 33 week and 5-day old baby girl who was born at 27 weeks. She was the result of a spontaneous placental abruption and had recently graduated from the level three nursery in First Hill. Meaghan was the nurse who I worked with and she was absolutely amazing. She had a diverse background in level two nursery care and worked in many different hospitals through her travel nursing carrier. She was up to date on evidenced based practice care and very informative about the all the rational for the care she was providing. It was by far one of the best clinical days. I learned how to do the calculation for total feed fluid volume based on the baby’s current weight. She taught

It was about 3:45 in the morning on a Sunday, where I found myself and my excited, wide-awake, good-looking boyfriend driving down a dark, eerie road to a hospital that was 61 miles away. Those 61 miles felt like light years to me I didn’t feel right all day today, I had a feeling deep down that my body was telling me that it was time. I was as nervous as I possibly could be, however, I had to remain completely calm because I could possibly be in labor and our first baby could arrive any time. So There I was, just Sitting there in that fast moving car, patiently waiting for the top of my big-ole belly to become super tight, tighter than a rubber band wrapped around your stomach 1000 times.…

Baby To Beast Freshman year is already stressful as it is. You are the new kids on the block, you dont know the ins and outs of the high school, and you dont want to make a fool of yourself in front of all these upperclassmen. Not only did I have to overcome that, I got diagnosed with an Atrial Septal Defect, or ASD for short. In other words, I had a hole in my heart between the two chambers of my heart. I was always a smaller kid in middle school.…

QSEN Competency: Teamwork and Collaboration ICARE Value: Accountability Journaling Question: Reflect on conversations/interactions you have heard or been involved in within the health care setting today and benefited the patient. This week in labour and delivery I was able to gain many new experiences. On Tuesday, I gained a lot through the interaction and conversation between healthcare workers and students as it was a slower day on the floor allowing me to see how important teamwork and collaboration is in the health field. This week I was able to work with Lisa, a registered travel nurse who did an excellent job at making me feel part of the team. She gave me many new experiences and taught me a lot through engaging me in with the patient.…

Surrounded by a team of nurses, one doctor, and what seemed to be a grouping of blinding lights, I had a peculiar moment of serenity. I can’t quite explain whether it was the epidural or the fact that for twelve hours my body was engulfed by excruciatingly painful contractions which seemed to be attacking me in a sporadic manner, but in that one moment everything was perfect. Somehow I just let go off every single fear I had, I just remembered that in any moment there would be an extraordinary occurrence. Although a natural part in many women’s lives, since the beginning of time, it was a phenomenon in my life.…

I am the oldest child. I have two younger siblings who I love unconditionally, but life as the oldest child is not the picnic most people think it is. I know this probably sounds cliché, becoming who I am because of my siblings, but it is the truth without them I would not be the person I am today. When I was four years old my mother became pregnant with my sister. My sister, Madison was born seven months before I turned five.…

During the time period of my daughter hospitalization I was unsure of what the outcome would be concerning her health and my job. I knew my daughter would need care and it did not matter how long her recovery could take. As her mother I would be there to provide the care she needed for however long she needed it. Also, I decided that I would take measures to build upon my skill-set so I would still be considered an asset when I reentered the workforce.…

When the patient was in labor and began pushing, I aided in supporting one of her legs while the nurse supported the other. I think it was truly amazing to see a child being brought into the world. The postpartum care was also a teamwork. I remembered from class lecture to check for clots in the urine because abnormal size (golf ball size) can be concerning.…

I had to cope with not being able to hold my twins. Instead, I would talk to them and touch their tiny bodies through the arm-holes of the incubator. When I was finally allowed to hold them, I realized that even the simple task of holding something so small and delicate was a challenge. With the assistance of the nurses, and a technique known as “kangarooing,” whereby skin to skin contact is used, my babies were sleeping on my chest in no time. After the twins and I mastered bottle feedings, I had to learn how to get them to latch onto my breast for their feedings.…
