Personal Narrative: Leukemia

When I was 12 years old, my family and I became introduced to the word ‘leukemia’ and various other diagnostic terms as they were placed on my then 2-year-old sister, Mia. At the time, Mia had a hopeful 85% chance of being cured and living a full, healthy life.
Two years after her diagnosis, and well into the road that we believed to be remission and recovery, we were informed that Mia had relapsed, and further treatment now involved a bone marrow transplant that I was first in line to be tested as match for. I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

For my final revision project, I decided to revise my fist essay “The Visible Cancer”. The reason I chose to edit this essay was the special connection that I had to it. When writing this essay, I was very invested in telling the audience how I had felt and describing what had happened with my dad’s cancer as best as I could. In making these revisions I thought it would be a good way to look back on how I viewed the situation when I first wrote this right after it happened compared to how I feel about it now after several months.…

During the ‘speed dating workshop’, I met an elderly lady who had Rheumatoid arthritis. Prior to the workshop I had known about osteoarthritis, a condition affecting primarily elderly people that causes pain in the joints and occurs with age. However, Rheumatoid arthritis is different to osteoarthritis as it can affect people at any age. The patient told of how she encountered an eight year old boy at the hospital, who was also diagnosed, which was surprising. Rheumatoid arthritis, unlike osteoarthritis, is a “progressive inflammatory disorder” involving the immune system recognising the synovium (the lining of the joints) as an invader cell and attacking the synovium (Page 1, Cush, Weinblatt and Kavanaugh, 2010).…

Hi Ms. Sanders, Prior to my current role as a patient safety analyst, I worked as an oncology nurse in the outpatient radiation oncology department at the cancer center of the hospital. As an oncology nurse, my primary role is to be the patient advocate with regards to treatment information and symptom management. One ethical issue that always concerns me is informed consent. I see informed consent not just the patient signing his/her name on the dotted line. It is having answers to questions that the patient may have or ought to have.…
