Personal Narrative: Lessons From A Cat

Lessons From a Cat Cats have a tendency to randomly show up around people’s houses. They will march on your deck, tear up your screens and sneak into your garage. Sound familiar? Most people who live in the country can answer this question yes, but how about those in town? Well, throughout my many years of living in the small town of Worthing, South Dakota, I had many cats come and go. However, one of the many cats chose to stay awhile. This cat was as fluffy as a cotton ball. His fur had caramel and chocolate colored stripes and one black stripe that went from his nose, down his back, and to the tip of his tail. He was a teddy bear. We called him Snickers. With my dad having a cat allergy, we could never let Snickers inside, so he spent most of his days in the garage or on our deck. On cold days he would wander up to our sliding glass door and do this little dance that we always called the “Snicker Dance.” This consisted of him putting his paws up on the glass door and kind of sliding …show more content…
My family and I are not sure of whatever happened to Snickers. It wasn’t uncommon for him to leave for a couple of days at a time, but one particular time he never returned. After a week of being gone, a friend of ours let us know there was a cat found dead near their house. They weren’t sure if it was Snickers, but the description fit. He was definitely an older cat, so we weren’t in shock from hearing the news. I was just grateful for the time that I did have with him. After having Snickers in my life, I not only viewed cats differently, but I also viewed other things differently. I learned that not all cats are insensitive and selfish and that I shouldn’t put expectations on animals or people based on stereotypes. Snickers taught me that I can be loved unconditionally, regardless of the mistakes I make. The unwavering loyalty that Snickers displayed is something I will never
