It was already 11 at night and I had to decide if I wanted to take the subway or pay the high fee for a taxi ride all the way from New York City to Hoboken, New Jersey. I ordered a Big Mac and a large fry to take home as my dinner and decided a taxi was the best way to travel for tonight. I lugged all of my sheet music into the backseat of the taxi with me and watched the bright lights disappear as I gobbled down my fast food meal. Nights like these make me remember my father the way he was before Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome took over his body and mind. He was lively with a personality larger than Times Square and that

7.09 am, I was awake. Greeted by the blinding light of the morning sun shining through my bedroom window and welcomed into the chaos by the erratic beating of my own. It had taken exactly 10 hours for Sudbury to die away. I sat there thinking, something I often do. I had large gaps of memory.…

The world is a very strange place, filled with many strange disorders and diseases, but the strangest of them all is Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome. This rare genetic disorder mostly affects males and is characterized by a variety of symptoms, which include “self-mutilation, hyperuricemia, choreoathetosis, and mental retardation.” (Wilson and Roy 1) The first documented case of Lesch-Nyhan Syndrome was in 1962, when a mother brought in her son (who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy), because he was experiencing painful urination and had a gritty like deposit in his diaper. The resident who examined the boy, along with his intern tested the deposit found in patient and determined that it was the consequence of an overproduction of uric acid, which is a waste product that the kidneys typically expel.…

“Can you believe we actually made it?’’ That’s what I asked my sister when we crossed the Brooklyn Bridge in our car. The lights, the people, the buildings, all so intriguing. We even saw the Statue of Liberty our first 5 minutes in the city. I couldn't help but to stick my head out of the window and breathe in that New York air, which was not a very good idea because there was trash a couple feet away from the car.…

On a Wednesday in November I set off on a journey to the Nation’s Capital. The bus fumes in the air, the chilly breeze flowing right through me took me to a special place. Over the horizon a giant white marble tower staring down on us as we walked through the park. As we walked I thought of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial my destiny this whole day.…

It was a cold, dark day in Utica, New York. The sky was a gloomy grey color and there was no sunshine to be seen for miles around. My mother and I were going to visit my grandmother for the third time that week. As we walked in the hospital, the scents of freshly brewed coffee and old flowers hit us like a brick wall. The inside of this building had become so familiar over the past two months, it did not come to shock anymore when an older woman ran screaming by, or a small child was crying because they had broken an arm or leg.…

“What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” is a commonly used quote. I can honestly say I didn’t hear it from an upbeat pop song at first. But from someone more important in life, my father. This summer I traveled without my parents for the first time. I remember my parents dropping Josh and I off at the airport then suddenly I started feeling nervous for no reason. I felt my stomach drop as I thought of the thousands of things that could go wrong, thoughts of 9/11 and terrorist attacks or thoughts of the Malaysian plane that disappeared and was never found. Flashes of movies or shows like Lost or Arrow, where there 's a plane crash and they are stranded on an island. Before the that day I had been cocky and not worried at all about traveling without my parents because in my eyes I was all grown up.…
