Lemoore, California. The 559, the 93245, the small rural town located in the central region of the San Joaquin Valley. A place that will melt flip flops to the ground in the summer, yet it will have people gathering around a fire in the winter with their hands wrapped tightly around a steaming cup of cocoa. Not much goes on in this town and it is not quite what someone would call a vacation destination, but there is indeed something special about this town. This special characteristic is the way religion connects and creates a family out of the majority of people who live in this town. The Roman Catholic faith is a large part of people’s lives here in the valley, including my own. My parents, being strong in their faith, had me baptized into …show more content…
I had so many questions and ideas that conflicted or challenged the beliefs of my faith. As a young teenager there was no way I was going to go talk to someone about it. What? And have them think I am going to become an atheist and go to hell, no way! Yes, I was the teenager too prideful to go and ask a more knowledgeable human being for help. Although, disregarding that mistake, time continued to pass and I often pondered upon my questions. Some were very common, such as “if God is all powerful then why does he not end poverty, or crime, or natural disasters?” Along with the question of “how come God cannot answer my prayers right away or ever?” These questions kept my mind busy, but there was one thought that played throughout my brain like a scratched record constantly on replay and that was “why does God allow terrible actions to fall upon people who do not deserve it?” It is a question that has passed through the thoughts of many people on this planet and it had me truly perplexed. Why would he allow actions of murder, rape, and theft to even be a human capability but as I would soon learn, the answer had been around me all my life. It was in an item that holds the answers to many challenges in our life. The one and only Holy

The memory of 126 Riverside Drive will always stay with me. The concrete in front of the apartment overlooking the park is separated into squares and covered in old gum and the occasional chalk doodle. You go up and stand on the single black concrete step and look up at the black marble and the silver 126. You walk in the clear glass door and walk onto the faded tile floor that goes from the bottom of the few lonely stairs through the next door and to the elevator. You feel the cold from the faded brass handrail and walk up the stairs to the buzzer with a list of all the apartments.…

Driving through Long Beach a week ago Friday, I was honored to be chauffeuring an Italian that just couldn't get enough of the jacarandas -- he said they looked like fairy trees and kept asking what they were called. My parents had jacarandas in each of the backyards of the homes I grew up in here in SoCal. I love seeing the world through the eyes of a journeyer.…

We spent the first night of the trip in a motel in Donner, CA. The next day we continued our journey to the San Fransico Bay area, where my father had secured a job working for the railroad. The first two days in California we stayed in a nice motel, and it even had a swimming pool.…

Your peripheral vision is gone—there’s complete focus, then a silence so muted that all you know is the feeling of your heart beating. Then, as you stand there motionless, you feel the adrenaline. I mean really feel it—a syrup coursing through your veins, yet not a syrup as it moves faster than blood. You know when it hits your heart because it starts beating faster, faster, faster, and then the feeling is gone. Then everything is gone—emotions, breath, sensation……

SunnyDale, That‘s where I grew up. It was the place where if you lived there people expected nothing good to come out of you. Around the age of 6 my mother moved us to South San Francisco due to the violence that occurred, but that didn’t change the labels. People would always comment about my family living in SunnyDale how my uncle sold dope, my aunt always throwing the wildest parties. I didn’t want to be seen as some kid who’s from the “Ghetto” growing up to become nothing in life.…

In 1967, my great grandmother settled in San Francisco from Nicaragua, a small country in Central America. The atmosphere of San Francisco at this time was one of acceptance and peace, stemming from the Summer of Love and the Haight-Ashbury culture. Coming from a poverty-stricken country, and having visited before, the Bay Area was an opportunity for a new life, better conditions, and job possibilities not available at home. Unfortunately, lack of a basic education and understanding of American culture hindered her opportunity to obtain legitimate employment. California offered her the opportunity to utilize her entrepreneurial skills and start her own bakery after a fews years of settling in the city.…

In the third grade, my Dad and I drove home from a birthday party for one of his fellow police officers. The festive and upbeat night took a turn for the worst when we reached the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Robert Road in Redondo beach; we had unexpectedly struck the back fender of a truck and spun out into the center of the intersection. As I sat in disbelief, my Dad spoke to the other driver and they exchanged information. He drove home with a sullen look that was new to me, we didn't say a word. At home, I sobbed as I overheard my Dad stress to my Mom that he would lose his beloved job.…

Eleven years, four months, eight days, and thirteen hours. That is the day and time when my unspoiled life changed. The day that I no longer was able to view the world through the clouded eyes of a child, but through the clear eyes of a young adult.
