Personal Narrative: Learning How To Swim

Decent Essays
I remembered, first time I tried to learn how to swim with my friend. I was at my friend’s house. We ate delicious pizza together. She wanted to go to the swimming pool at her house, but she knew I was scared of the water. So, she was going to teach me how to swim. It was very frightened and that new situation made me feels nervous.

Growing up in Brooklyn, in the early 90’s was one of the best experiences in my life. I remember the ice cream trucks, corner stores, fire hydrates being opened for the kids especially when there was a block party but most of all, the unity of families and neighbors. Many people will say “Brooklyn, only the strong survive” and I have lived by that phrase my entire life. It showed me the beauty of living in one of the boroughs that makes up New York City and has taught me to be a strong person. It’s not made for the weak.…

I'll always remember the time my brother and I got lost at Hershey Park. My grandparents decided it would be fun to take my parents, my brothers, and me to Hershey Park, so they invited us to go with them, which we decided we would go with them. I sat down by myself and reflected. After tens of thousands of hours of devotion, swimming has become a huge part of who I am, and will no doubt shape the person I will come to be. One of the earliest lessons swimming taught me was to never give up. When I was 9, swimming taught me to fight the fatigue during lap two of a race. When I was twelve, swimming taught me to attack race two with everything I had, even if race one hadn't gone my way.…

The fall of sophomore year I decided to join the high school swim team. I knew it would be a lot of hard work to stay on the team but was willing to put in the extra effort. Since I was new to competitive swimming I started off swimming in the “easiest” events. These included the 50 meter and the 100 meter freestyle.
