Personal Narrative: Leah's Life

Improved Essays
For my friend Leah’s birthday, her husband gifted her a series of pottery-making lessons. In the weeks prior to her starting these lessons, she had expressed to me the difficulties she was having putting God first and finding the time to soak in His word. As a mom of two young boys, her life was hectic, to say the least.

After one of her first lessons, she texted me the following:

“So last night in pottery class, I kept thinking about God being the potter and us the clay. The teacher kept saying the hardest thing was getting the clay centered, because if it isn’t centered on the wheel, you can’t mold it. Then I kept thinking of how the hardest thing for me is to get centered on God. I kept picturing me on the potter’s wheel, running around and Jesus just asking me to please stay still and focus on Him. The instructor was preaching to me and he didn’t even know it!”

Take a moment and picture yourself in the middle of a potter’s wheel. You’re just spinning and spinning, getting wobbly and misshapen from the pressure pushing on you. Now picture Jesus sitting down at the wheel. He gently lifts His loving hands to surround you, molding you with precision, patience, and care. The more we let Him shape us, the more we become like Him. While the world can make us feel like just a lump of clay, in God’s hands we are vivid, unique pieces. If only we would let Him take the wheel (insert Carrie Underwood joke

Most Christians have at times experienced a “crisis of faith” due to new contrasting ideals that may provoke questions (Carroll, 409). Entering college for the first time is a vulnerable time for anyone who has been brought up all their life to think and believe as they are told. College freshman, Alfred Corn, was experiencing this unfortunate crisis. (Carroll, 409) The knowledge we individually obtain throughout our livelihood constantly evolves and adapts to new information and experiences, unfortunately learning too much at times makes us question our current standing beliefs.…

Object Lessons From An Abnormal Bike I recently had the opportunity to view a video clip of a man demonstrating how to ride a backwards bike. The bike was designed in such a way that when the handlebars were turned to the right, the front wheel would turn to the left and vice versa. This made the simple act of bike riding much more challenging. As I pondered this fact, it made me think of the Christian’s walk. God constantly tries to turn us the right way (His way) and yet many times we go the opposite way (our own way).…

While reading I noticed the word "love" came up every so often. One point John 3:16 covered, was loving one another. It also mentioned the way we know love is that Jesus laid down his life for us; so we should lie down our lives for our brothers and sisters. This meant we should try to become more selfless and put others before ourselves. In Embracing an Alternative Orthodoxy, it also commented on love, when it described how God loved everything he created.…

Introduction to Music Studies One point that really resonated with me was in Dr. Carolyn Hart’s speech. She mentioned that sometimes God will block our intentions, our plans, with a red light in order to get us to turn in the direction He wants us to go. I was very encouraged and impacted by this idea, that particular week and the week before I had been feeling quite discouraged, I wasn’t feeling at home in Wheaton, I was feeling overwhelmed by the large workload and the (small) amount of sleep college life was providing. I did not know if I should continue with music or even at Wheaton, I was wondering if I should have stayed at my previous school, in my “comfort zone,” and just a couple weeks into the semester I was already contemplating switching majors.…

#1) My younger sister has had a tremendous impact on my life, because even at just 20 years old she has overcome many obstacles that has made her more aware of feminist ideals and issues simply through her own experiences of these realities, despite the fact that she has never taken a women’s studies course, or any other college course. Her experiences and her willingness to share these, has educated me about these issues as well, and has also encouraged me to become involved in the field of women’s studies. When she was just 14 years old, my sister had a late term abortion because there was no way she was ready to have a child, financially, emotionally, or psychologically. During this time, she was also being severally bullied and harassed…

Love Casts Out Fear Although Dr. Miller’s discussion on the book of Job brought to light numerous insights that I had not previously considered, there was one phrase in particular that had a tremendous impact on my understanding of my own approach to God. To provide some context, Dr. Miller was interpreting what Job was thinking and feeling after God had asked him a disarming series of questions. Dr. Miller reworded Job’s new, humble perspective on his circumstances in the following manner: “…I know that God is so good that He wouldn’t be evil to me... And I totally trust Him.…

This was my life; an insecure student who had almost no friends, and even if he did, they weren’t really the best friends. They were more like acquaintances than friends. The mystery of the self and relationships has given way to numerous books lining the shelves in bookstores for years, as well as filling the wallets of counselors. Pride, humility, personality type, and introspection are merely a few terms that come to mind when reflecting on pertinent items dealing with these topics. When examining the relationships in one’s life a certain ingredient is relevant, and that is self-awareness of who one is in relation to God, self, and other people. The lack of such comprehension can result in turbulent or failed relationships, revealing the importance of attaining insight into one’s self-image and recognizing areas of strength and weakness. Understanding the foundation that one’s worldview stands on also contributes…
