Personal Narrative: Leader-In-Training

Improved Essays
Two summers ago, I was a Leader-In-Training (LIT) at the United Methodist camp, Camp Lake Stephens. It is a 3 week camp experience that fifteen and sixteen year olds get to experience where you study spirituality, solve low challenge courses, and grow friendships. This was my second year being a part of this program, and both years were very eye opening. The program helped me grow in my leadership skills and my spirituality. We have one night where we pick a spot around camp, and we cookout and make our own food. This seems like an easy enough thing to do, but when there are 2 ice chests, a box of utensils and plates, and other supplies, its not so easy to do when your campsite is 2 miles away, and across a lake. There were 12 LITs in our …show more content…
The sun already was beginning to set beneath the horizon of the trees, so it would be dark soon. It would take a long time and much effort to haul the supplies around the lake to the campsite. I asked if we could use the canoes at the lake to ferry the supplies and people across the lake. The counselors said we could since one of them was a lifeguard. This system of ferrying the supplies and people over the lake worked well. One of the counselors and my friend rowed me and the supplies across. As they were going back for more people, I could go ahead and organize the supplies and start piles of small, medium, and large sticks. More people were ferried over and thus we had a humble pile of sticks, and a small fire going. It seemed that we doubled our production of starting a campsite and cooking our food. Just by offering a few ideas and constituting everyone, allowed us to solve a small, but challenging problem. In most challenges that a group and I face, I sit back and watch and observe others think of ideas to solve it, and i assess the pros and cons of both. I feel like this is my leadership trait, to be the silent listener, then when people are desperate for help or some point in the right direction, I am there to aid them in pros and cons. In this situation, I was more proactive and was the one that caused ideas to flow. I believe I am a strong leader in both situations, and can motivate people to achieve more than what they think they

Once everyone got situated, they brought over the guy that we would be carrying all the way up the mountain. His name was Brad, he had a bad knee, and he was almost 300 pounds. Right then we knew that it was not going to be a cake walk walking all the way up the mountain. But we were still in high spirt; we knew that we were changing this kid’s life by helping him hike a mountain. They assistants and instructors came over and started to strap Brad in his harness.…

The Leadership Challenge discusses “strengthen (ing) resilience” (pp 206). I am the kind of person who wants all of my ducks in a row so when one or two are out of line, I get flustered not to mention overwhelmed to the point wanting to quit. The past few years have been one of loss in various ways; my father’s passing, my beloved pet for nine years passing, my husband’s illness, the loss of our house as well as the loss of my husband’s and partner’s business. Even though we are still reeling with the impact of what we have been hit with, we continue to encourage one another emotionally to look ahead, not dwell on the past.…

There’s the cheeseburger festival, which, being the “cheeseburger capital of the Texas”, is a must. They have Maize Days to celebrate their community’s people and businesses. Through those activities there were some kids who were struggling at some activities. I motivated them to keep pushing on, giving them pointers on how to complete the activity. I felt connection to the campers within a week. For example even though I didn’t do a challenge myself, I still felt accomplished by helping out the campers to complete the activity. This experience taught me to trust people who I never meet before.…

An experience that displayed my ability to mentor was during my time helping out at Columbus Elementary School. There was one boy named Presley and he had trouble focusing, so I often ended up at his table trying to draw his attention away from his peers and towards his work. He was struggling with math, subtraction specifically and heavily relied on finger counting to do any problem. After about two weeks doing number lines and tally marks, he greatly improved and no longer needed any help for simpler subtraction.…

My “personal odyssey” occurred relatively recently, this past summer while I was at a sleepaway camp in New Hampshire. The last year you are eligible to come, the summer before your sophomore year, you stay in a cabin off the main camp called Cabin 12, which holds great significance due to the fact that you’re the oldest on campus, and closer to a counselor then a camper. Being engaged, on time to activities, and having extreme enthusiasm to an almost unbearable point. I was exposed to a concept, one in which you see more clearly when you grow up. This idea is embodied in the quote, “fake it ‘till you make it.”…

Just as Mattie Stepanek once said, “When there is collaboration, things can be achieved.” Some people agreed to bring tent, and some claimed to bring their own sleeping bags. After handling down all these, I organized a meeting with the participants about things they needed to prepare and take care…
