Personal Narrative: Koda's Dream

If I was granted one wish, mine would be to unfurl the mystery that is a dog’s dream. Koda’s twitching paws, fluttered breathing, and muffled whines prompt me to wonder at the source of agitation in her serene slumber. How could a dog’s mind, so pure in its capability to love unconditionally, be able to conjure the evil within nightmares? Do dogs invent new scenarios, supernatural powers, or personal utopias within dreams, as humans often do? My mind ponders these questions as Koda, my nine-year-old chocolate Labrador retriever, yields herself to sleep and, quite possibly, an ephemeral world so idyllic that it exceeds human comprehension. My wonder of my dog’s dream is a testament to not only my natural curiosity but also my love for an animal appropriately known as “man’s best friend.” …show more content…
Her energetic, bubbly nature was dismantled by vomiting and suffering that wracked her body. My family and I rushed her to the nearby veterinary hospital, only to receive discouraging news: a cancerous tumor was lodged on her colon. That night, with a stream of tears and the impending fear of the situation keeping me company, I realized that Koda is more than a pet; she’s an unstoppable force of energy that has positively changed my life in more ways than one. My devotion of energy and time to teaching Koda tricks strengthened the virtues of patience and determination within myself. Consecutive days worth of grass stains on my jeans and fingers nibbled by Koda’s rapturous desire for the treats in my hand yielded not only a pet capable of sitting, staying, and begging, but also a human flushed with the fruit of her labor. Koda’s new abilities were my first, and surely not my last, meaningful
