Personal Narrative: King City Rehabilitation

It was a sweltering day in the summer of 2009. The dawn of the day started like any other day, with the rising sun and the bright blue sky; however, it ended like no other day. I woke up to the sounds of chatter that came from downstairs. It was noisier than usual because we had family from California and Canada over at our house. This happened due to the fact that our two-story house had unoccupied rooms, but there was an influx of people, so my brother and I had to surrender the room that we shared and sleep in our parents’ room.
I slowly got up from the bed and took a slow stroll down the stairs. My parents, uncles, aunts and some of my cousins were already eating. As I sat down, my mother poured me a bowl of rice porridge. As I devoured

Prior to this moment, my grandfather fell down at a rehabilitation facility called King City Rehab and Living Center, and he sustained serious injuries, like broken bones, that caused internal bleeding because he was a brittle, old man in his nineties. My grandfather was transferred to a hospital in Tualatin where he received extensive treatment for his injuries.
Weeks passed since his arrival to the hospital, and he became unresponsive. My father decided to bring everyone to the hospital to see my grandfather because all of our relatives arrived recently.
I opened the rear door of a 1996 Honda Accord, and I sat in the middle seat in the back as I patiently waited for the others to get in the car. Finally, everyone got in the car, and my father started up the car. The engine roared like a lion, and then, there was movement. The car reversed out of the garage and off we

He slept on the cushioned bed with layers of blankets covering his cold body. His hands were motionless like his feet. His eyes were shut closed. As I examined my grandfather, a beeping sound startled me, and it came from one of the machines I was near. I slowly took two steps back as I pretended not to notice it. I thought I did something wrong, but I did not, so I started to investigate the room to find the source of the sounds. My eyes spotted the heart monitor machine. The machine stood next to my grandfather, and it was the machine closest to me. The lines were no longer waves. It was a flat and straight line now. The machine no longer made a continuous beeping sound like it once did. I started to do some thinking in my mind by connecting the dots with the things I already knew. If the line was flat, and there was a constant beeping sound, there can only be one reason. All of a sudden, a sharp knife pierced through my heart, and a waterfall emerged from my eyes. I felt the tears rolling down the side of my cheeks and into my shirt. I covered my face with my tiny hands and wiped the tears

Missiles could be seen in the distance exploding villages nearby, shots were fired followed by screams of terror and pain. Villages were found in pieces, and the dead left lying on the muddied, dirt ground. Survivors running for their life in tattered and soiled clothes. Nights were spent in the cold, without food, the fear of being killed, and no place that one can call safe. It was in the year of 1975, when the Khmer Rouge had finally taken over Cambodia.…

I wasn’t shy when I was around my immediate family, but if you would put me in a room with people that I didn’t know. Well, I wouldn’t say a word. I would be so quiet that I would just sit there and you could forget that I was in the room.…

It was April 20th, 1999 when a slight breeze filled the sky, enjoying the cool winds I rocketed towards school. Arriving at school, I felt like a log flowing down a river stream, and then suddenly a loud "Bzzzzz" echoed down the halls. The hallways felt like a school of fish viciously running away from a predator hunting them down. In a matter of seconds, everything calmed down and the first period started. A sudden rumbling sound came out from my stomach, as I anxiously waited for the lunch bell to ring.…

According to Joint Commission (2015), “every year in the United States, hundreds of thousands of patients fall in hospitals, with 30-50 percent resulting in injury. Injured patients require additional treatment and sometimes prolonged hospital stays. In one study, a fall with injury added 6.3 days to the hospital stay. The average cost for a fall with injury is about $14,000” (Joint Commission, 2015, para 1). “An accidental fall has been defined as a sudden and nonintentional change of posture to the ground or a lower level, onto an object, floor, pavement, ground, or any other type of surface, and includes slipping, tripping (stumbling), falling on other people, loss of balance, and accidental stooping” (Mahmoud, Ghada Essam & Nassar, 201,…
