Being a leader was not natural for me. As a child, I was a clear follower, blindly following the lead of others. It wasn’t until high school that I became comfortable with the idea of leading. But I recognize the hardships people face everyday and continually want to help those through difficult times. It was through Key Club, a student-led community service organization, that I realized that I had the key to help those struggling. I’ve always loved helping others, but as a child I always believed that my age limited me. I thought I had to wait until I was older, more mature, or had more money to really make a difference. It wasn’t until I joined Key Club that I realized anyone can make a difference. The student-led community service based club suddenly became so much more than just another thing to put on my application. Key Club taught me that anyone can make a difference, can make change, as long I had the passion. I got involved in projects that impacted my community, my state, and even the world. And I got the opportunity to connect with people who shared the same joy and love of volunteering. Key Club soon become a family that has a permanent spot in my heart. The club’s four values of leadership, character building, caring and inclusiveness soon became mine. For the last four years, Key Club has been a door opening experience, offering new opportunities and a new way to be happy.
