Personal Narrative-Kevin Laue Is My Hero

Everyone has a different hero and different views on what makes someone a hero. Some people view heroes as characters in movies or comic books that fly and wear capes, but not me. Being 6'11 with fiery red hair and only half a left, Kevin Laue is my hero. I had the opportunity to meet Kevin last Saturday at a student council convention at Vandebilt. His story touched my heart and made me realize how much I take for granted every day. He first told us about his arm, or lack thereof. He tells us that his umbilical cord wrapped around his neck in the womb, and he fought back using his arm as a shield. Due to a lack of circulation from the cord, he was born with an arm that ended just below the elbow. Kevin Laue had a rough childhood. When he was around the age of 7, Kevin’s parents got a divorce. Soon after, his father was diagnosed with cancer and died. Kevin, aside from having a rough time at home, had a rough time in school as well. He couldn’t read until he was in third grade and struggled greatly with bullying. This made a huge impact on Kevin and he told us that from that day he worked as hard as he possibly could to become a top athlete and student. The next year he made the team, and by his junior year Kevin Laue had become one of the top six basketball players in his home state of California. Unfortunately, he missed out on his senior season due to a broken leg. He received a scholarship from a top college in Chicago and when he showed his teacher he says that she turned to him and laughed. She told him he’d never make it and that he wasn’t good
