Cities are carefully crafted. Most city planners and engineers would agree that, "Design is about creating spaces for people to enjoy and of course, creating moments where you elevate the spirit, but 'design for good ' is figuring out a program that not only creates better spaces, but creates jobs, new industry and raises the conversation about the way we build" (Cameron Sinclair). Although there are plenty of public places around Santa Clarita worth mentioning, the one that stands out the most to me is Main Street Newhall. Descried by the city's website as "an eclectic shopping, dining and entertainment destination that mixes rustic charm with cosmopolitan appeal. With boutique shopping, fine and casual dining, and Old West heritage, Old Town Newhall is the place to shop, gather with friends and family, and enjoy a day or night out on the town."…

    Hyde Park History

Before businessman Monroe Martin Shipe founded Hyde Park just two miles north of The University of Texas’ main campus, the land was a popular location full of excitement and promise. A moderately sized plot of land boasted attractions like the Capital State Fair and the horse and automobile racetracks accompanied by grandstands that seated a considerable 3,500 spectators. With the entrepreneurship of Shipe coupled with the propagation of public interest, the young neighborhood witnessed a period of expansion that would eventually earn it the recognition as Austin’s very first suburb. However, as generations passed, the atmosphere of Hyde Park evolved. In the beginning, it was a vibrant and rapidly growing village-like section of town, but since its period of incredible growth and prosperity, there has been a decline in its social and economic prowess within the city of Austin.…

My core assumption is that the actual effects and net results of these DFW Metroplex developments around transit centers can be better explained as the result(s) of residential income level differentiation (limited resources and restricted residential options) and the subsequent choices that thereby result can often be misinterpreted as planned or proposed positive effects from TODs. 1. Mockingbird Station TOD Located at 5465 East Mockingbird Lane, Mockingbird Station is the first mixed-use project designed around a multi-modal, rail-based transit station in Dallas. Driven solely by market dynamics, the target group for potential residents were the affluent customers who were living in the surrounding neighborhoods.…

One thing that we can all agree on,is that small towns like Columbia City could use a little more variety. It would be more interesting for the native residents of the town, and in some cases like bringing in a restaurant,it could help expand that restaurant’s business. But of course like every big decision the question persists:What restaurant would we bring to the city?I would insist that we bring in a Steak-n-Shake. There are a multitude of reasons to support my decision. The first reason I think we should do this,is that A Steak-n-Shake would of course bring more variety to the city.…

Sure, there will be some days you will be left home alone while I go to work, but I’m sure you can find something to keep yourself entertained.” Stopping near a black colored leather couch located in the center of the white carpeted living room, I look back at him. He’s making it sound as if I’m planning to stay in this house forever. The only reason I even agreed to willingly be carried to his house was to confirm that he is the interesting human I spent my whole life searching for. Love, kindness, companionship, all those things mean nothing when it comes right down to it.…

William Whyte’s book The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces brought me relief. As a child, I remember asking some of the same questions he asked about city spaces, but wondered if anyone else bothered to think about seemingly trivial matters such as what made a place busy and how people are supposed to act in these busy places. Such questions are important for a child to come to terms with new surroundings, but is also important for city planners, as Whyte pointed out. The main question Whyte posed was what makes a city space successful, the main criterion of which was how much a space was used. In order to support his hypotheses, Whyte uses field observations obtained using cameras, in-person observations, and specific examples such as the Crystal Court of the IDS Center in Minneapolis.…

Stepping outside of the dimly lit and grand cathedral, I immediately noticed three things. The first was the blinding sunlight that hit my face with such force it brought tears to my eyes. An interesting fact about the coffee shops here in Jacksonville, North Carolina, is that we have had several privately owned establishments long before the big named Starbucks franchise came into town. Maybe it 's because Jacksonville, North Carolina is such an small town, the residents here are comfortable enjoying their coffee in a cozy, down to earth environment. Although we have since been invaded by two Starbucks coffee shops (within less than a block of each other), we still hold true to the smaller, locally owned café 's. Big franchises just can 't compare to the friendliness of a family owned and operated business. Moka Joe 's is such a place. Located away from the heavy traffic, Moka Joe 's is nestled in a small strip mall.…
