KaLeiah is incredibly smart despite her age, but most of all her love for others is shown mostly through her relationship with her mother. I never would have had believed that a young three year old girl and her mother would be my major teachers. However, they showed me how to love others, let others love me, and how to help others who are willing. Keisha and KaLeiah began to slowly teach me how to let myself …show more content…
Relationships are not formed instantaneously. I feel the most important relationships are created through hard times and distance. KaLeiah and Keisha’s relationship is stronger than, before she left for basic camp. Keisha had the strength for eight elongated months in basic camp for KaLeiah. When she was sad and missing KaLeiah, Keisha was able to keep her mind on her goals. This is one reason Keisha showed how important KaLeiah is to her. KaLeiah would make her pictures and art for Keisha and KaLeiah would want to call her all the time. They would have set times where Keisha would call KaLeiah. “Melissa, levantate rapido” that translates to Melissa you have 5 seconds to get up, and be ready or you will feel the wrath of The Chancla (a weapon used from all Hispanic mother’s to demonstrate authority.) Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Which usually consists of the crispy black goya beans and medium sized white eggs all wrapped in a soft warm corn tortilla, I was thirteen when my mom was seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from exhaustion from cleaning houses, but it was not an option, my father's income was just not sufficient enough to support three children and an incoming one. Sometime, when I was about four, in a small, isolated country kitchen in regional Victoria, my mother noticed that I was taking "funny turns", moments that took me away and into my own world. It took time but eventually the diagnosis came back - welcome to epilepsy. Then, back in the day it was a limiting and defining description; no support groups; little information but much fear; it stalked me through all facets of life, complicating both the serious and the mundane. It changed little things, fell between you and life, little hurdles, like risk; the meds made you nod off in the afternoon; the need to carry medication (got your wallet; got your pills), explanations and reassurances for teachers, coaches and, just when you thought you…
