Personal Narrative: Junior High School

Amber has been a friend of mine since we met in Fourth Grade. We were in the same grade, went to the same school, and shared many classes together. We both belong to the school band and both played the oboe. For several years in Junior High, we were official BFF's (Best Friends Forever), enjoying such typical adolescent girl activities as sleepovers, movies, (Yes, we both loved the Twilight series at the time) and incessant texting. We were similar in so many ways. It wasn't until we entered HIgh School that I began to notice subtle differences between us, more specifically in our home lives. For one thing, Amber and her family seem to move every year or two whereas I have lived in the same house for fifteen years. Late in our Freshman year, Amber's mother moved out, leaving Amber with her father and later filing for divorce. I found out later than her mother had been married twice before and that Amber had …show more content…

No one told me that any of this was wrong but it did strike me as just not the way things were suppose to be, and certainly the opposite of the stable family that I was a member of. I gradually felt Amber and me growing apart. Her grades began to slip and she began taking less rigorous courses than I did. From the solid A/B grades she received in Junior High when she was taking pre-AP courses, Amber began getting B/C's in regular classes. She also seem to lose focus on any long term goals that she once had and seems unsure about whether to even go to college or

In the seventh grade, I faced a large transition in life. The previous year I had experienced middle school for the first time, but I would make that entrance again. I moved from Texas to North Dakota, where seventh grade was the first year of middle school. I took on those same fears and hopes that I had faced before, but in an unfamiliar place where I had no one except for family to give me support. I tried a lot of new things that year, mainly wrestling.…

My best friend recently got her heart broken and asked me why does it feel like the pain will never stop, why didn’t he want her anymore, or why she wasn’t enough. I felt hurt, because she is worth so much more than a boy who is still growing, I even told her that. I explained how it is a long process and that it all works out in the end. But you must understand the process, the time, and dedication it takes to overcome the pain. “Why did it affect you as much as it did?”…

It was not until my sophomore year that we actually started talking to each other; we were like best friends. Over the summer we hung out a lot; we would go shopping together, movies and go to each other houses. The more time I spent with her, the more things I notice about her. When she needed me I was there for her, but when I needed her she was never there. For example, when she needed help with her research paper I was there for her and when I look back at it now, I was the one that did the whole paper.…

She called me her friend a lot, which always made me feel guilty for not doing the same. We’d actually been friends for a time, and then it was just easier to say we were friends instead of actually saying that we had almost nothing in common and made each other uncomfortable. I think that’s because the familiar is easy enough and I didn’t want to put any effort into saying anything that might make her upset. Sure, I was called for help a few times, I stayed up telling her that everything would look better in the morning, hugged her when she cried about things that neither of us remember now.…
