Personal Narrative: Journey To The Governor's School

Decent Essays
Though I am still young, I believe myself to be incredibly ready for the independence and knowledge that going to the Governor's School will bring. I have always been more mature in my behaviors and mannerisms, which oftentimes makes me feel as if schooling is too easy or boring for me. I would be excited to go to a learning community such as this one that will bring me challenges and allow me to reside with others of my age that also desire a greater learning community. I have been away from home on multiple occassions, including ECU Band Camp, among other summer camps, for a week. I also believe that I have a great independence, and sometimes I crave this independence while at home. I think that participating in a residential learning community

My first memory at North Carolina Governor’s School West is of crying next to my parents on a bench under a giant tree. It was move-in day for the five-and-a-half-week session, and I was already sure that they would be the worst weeks of my life. I was terrified; I knew no one except two students from my high school, who were rising juniors and to whom I had never spoken before. After that stressful first day, I fell asleep unsure of how I could make it on my own in a place filled with such talented, intelligent, and unfamiliar people. A week later, I knew that Governor’s School would be one of the most treasured experiences of my entire life.…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

My time at St. Cecilia school is never going to be forgotten. St. Cecilia has shaped me to be the person I am today spiritually, academically, and my friendships with other people. The theme of this year was living our strengths through service. I think this means that God has given us all a talent and we have to serve others through it. St. Cecilia gives many opportunities to do so.…

I entered the Holmdel school system when I was three years old. In my young years, I was a very shy person; I wasn’t one to hang out with my classmates outside of school, or connect with new friends in general. Despite my early willingness to seek solitude and reluctance to meet people, my school became a friendly community for me. I can comfortably say that I’m a better person because of the peers I grew up around, the teachers I learned from, and the parents that cared for me. My adolescent interest for computers came out of those people - the friends who introduced me to video games, the instructors who programmed in their spare time, and the father who came from a technological background himself.…

I struggled with trusting others, time management and battling multiple tasks at once. Luckily, I had a lot of practice throughout the year. For instance when we had to record a News Show for Mr.Mora's class, I was faced with all of these problems.…

By talking to my mom and friends, they all felt that I should do whatever is best for me. It was ultimately up to me whether or not I would leave Connally High School. Upon looking, I was stuck between two high schools in the Waco area. I decided to visit one of them, University High School. When I stepped into the building, I immediately felt that I was in my first high school again because of University’s size, a student body of over 1,000 students.…

In March of 2012, I arrived to America. The moment I opened my eyes, I saw a group of people chatting in English fluently. I looked at them with some fear and was worried that I wasn’t going to fit into this society. I missed my friends, my school and the sounds of Arabic being spoken. Later on, I had to attend my first American school.…

The best way to start this brief summary of my experience in the Helms School of Government would to go back to freshmen year. I went into college wanting to be a double major in Zoology and Zoo and Wildlife Biology. That was something I had thought I wanted to do and thought God wanted me to do. Although my mother, knowing me and knowing my favorite classes in high school were always Government or History classes, told me to take Government 200. Well, after the first semester I took both Government 200 and Biology 101.…

I believe that teenagers learn a lot of lessons throughout their four years of high school. There are times when high school is very challenging, but looking back now it’s crazy how time flies. I am extremely thankful for the experience of Concord High School, but I feel like I can about sum up all that high school has taught me, and is still teaching me, by giving some advice. Number one, do NOT procrastinate. Yup I am most definitely still learning this one.…

I can hear the voice of the sergeant behind me telling me “go faster, take longer strides!”, as I am trying to catch up to my platoon. As I slowly start to fall behind from my platoon. I feel like an outsider, and I began to question why am I even here? I try going faster, and taking longer strides, but they seem more far away with each step. Now I feel like I don’t belong there anymore, and I fade away recalling the first time I stepped a foot in Virginia Military Institute.…

Make the schools and teachers fake names!!!!!!!! When I signed up for the EDCI 20500 I was not sure what to expect when going to Chicago Public Schools. In class, we discussed, watched videos, and read books over inner city schools and the experiences that the students have and teachers have in the schools. Before I came to Chicago and attended George Leland Elementary School, I expected the classroom to be bland. When we talked about Chicago Public Schools in class we talked about how they do not have a ton of money to buy resources.…
