Jose and the Wildfire “I’m so excited!” I heard my mom’s voice coming from the kitchen. “It’s Jose’s first day of middle school!” She was on the phone with my aunt. “Jose hurry up! You don’t want to be late to your first day!” She called to me. “I’m coming, don’t rush me!” I told her as I scrambled down the stairs. She flew over to me and handed me my lunch. “I packed your favorite aphids from that tree down the street.” We lived in a small in a small house in the forest. I was an only ladybug; I had no siblings. “Now get going. Your dad is waiting in the car.” I waved goodbye to my mom and got in my dad’s car. “Ready for your first day bugger” My dad said as I

As i walked in, I saw my best friend sitting at the front of the class with an empty seat next to her. I sat down next to her. Her name was Cadence. We had been friends since we were larvae. “Welcome to your first day of middle school children,” The teacher said. We will be starting your first class soon. We are just waiting for a few more students. “Did you hear the news?” Cadence whispered to me as we waited for our class to begin. “There is supposed to be a huge lightning storm tonight!” She loved storms. “No!” I hated storms. For the rest of the day, I dreaded the storm. At recess I could see the storm clouds loom on the horizon. They looked so calm yet so scary, as though they were taunting me.
At the end of the day, I ran to my dad’s car as he pulled up to the school. “Go home fast!” I told him. “There is going to be a huge lightning storm tonight!”
“It’s just a storm Jose. There is nothing to be afraid of!” There was everything to be afraid of.
When we got home I could hear the thunder in the distance. I could see the lightning a few miles away. It was horrifying. I ran inside the house. “Mom! Mom! There is a storm coming!” I screeched.
“I know,” she said. “It is just a storm Jose. You’ll

I heard him run away, finding people to help. I heard screams and calls for help. I heard loud booms and the sound of fire burning down everything I learned to love. I heard my friends and family scream and die, and I did nothing. After a while, the sound quieted down, and I fell asleep.
I woke up the next morning very hot and very tired. My back felt different; It felt harder. My hands felt stronger, like I could dig. Something felt weird in my mouth; I grew teeth. I got out from in my hole and looked around. Everything was gone. Nothing but ash remained. I saw the remnants of my home and friends and family all around me. I was devastated.
“No. I have to be strong,” I told myself. “I have to find a new source of food and water. Maybe these new abilities I have gained I can find some way to live on my own.” After brainstorming ideas on how to find a source of food and water, I decided to dig down. My back now can protect me from injuries as rubble fell on it, and my arms can dig faster than they ever could before. I might find something I could eat. I figured that I can get water from the rainfall, since it rained every other day where I lived and I can live nearly 6 months without

Author, Joan Didion, wrote to the Los Angeles notebook about the events of a Santa Ana to describe to others that had not been there what develops. Within her text, Didion writes using person pronouns such as “we, I, and us” to include herself with the people who experienced the storm first hand. She also uses colloquialisms including “Route 66” and “Cajon/San Gorgonio Passes,”information only people that live in or have visited that area would know. Her explicit audience is to people that live in the California but may not have experienced the storm themselves while her implicate audience would be to the people that had not been in the storm. As Didion describes the strange occurrences that happen in the preparation of a Santa Ana, she works…

Right from the start, our two essays approach their own topics in their own unique ways, using their own unique terminologies, and describing their individual weather event in drastically different tones. The first essay, What They Don’t Tell You About Hurricanes, starts off by declaring the uncertainty of a hurricane. The essay elaborates on the aftermath of a previous maelstrom that maliciously tore through the coast, initiating deadly lightning fires and horrendous floods. The monotonous way one prepares for such a storm is described almost in a detached, robotic way as if the ones preparing do not want to show any emotion because they know that if they do, all that will emerge is fear. Fear of the unknown, fear of the known, and an incredible…

Everything was silent. The only noise you could hear was the wind whistling and the sound of raindrops crashing down on the window. The night sky was black as ink, there was not a single star to be seen and there he was standing in the dark all alone watching the atmosphere change ferociously. The howling of the wind grew louder every minute. The raindrops grew larger.…

Meanwhile, poor Sarah was home worrying about me, and the weather, which appeared particularly nasty. Texas is where we learned the phrase “tornado watch.” In fact, when we left Texas to finish flight school in Fort Rucker, Alabama she said she would never live in Texas again. At the time, I was too worried about dying in a helicopter crash or failing the next phase and “washing out” to give her the attention she deserved. We were newlyweds, and she forgave me-…

The forlorn and depressing sky hangs above their young minds, sweeping them away into summer. Although the clouds say otherwise, the teenagers orbit the town of South St. Paul, throwing mud to others in the river and digging up asphalt as they ride, skimming across the streets in inhuman speed. The rain fastly approaches the vulnerable children as they watch the first drops shudder on the ground, shaking from the merciless wind that sweeps the trees and hats off of teens. The school rings the bell, although most have left already, their hands aching from pencil work.…

It was around 6:00 pm, and my mom, and sister's Nikki and Tori, and myself, all walked out of the dirty, cream-colored door, leading into the garage at our house. As we piled into our dark blue mini-van to go to my third-grade parent/teacher/student conference, nervous energy was suspended in my skull. The nervousness didn't surprise me. I always felt fear whenever I headed to the parent/teacher conference.…

Recently while spending a legally required weekend at my dad’s house, my dad received a text message from my step mom Crystal. The message read she was going to commit suicide! Frantically my dad jumped from his seat and shoved his feet into his boots, not bothering to lace them. On his way out the door he spun around and violently screamed “This is all of your fault!”. His words were piercing, breaking down and weakening the already fragile bond between him and I.…

Connection “Outside, nothing but rain and darkness”. Percy, his Mom and, Grover were taking a drive up to a cabin when suddenly it started pouring rain and thunderstruck the whole area around them. I chose to connect to part of the book and quote because a few years ago I was at my grandma’s house for a family event and a tornado struck. I was swimming in the pool when suddenly the sky turned black, the thunder started roaring, and, hail started falling. It was such a scary moment for me and my whole family.…

We had ate dinner around 8:30 that nite. It was getting cloudy again and I could already tell it was going to rain again. We had already prepared for this because we had put some water proof spray on our tent and we put tarps over our tent. So now we didn’t have to worry, but of course, that didn’t matter. It was maybe 12:00 am when it started to rain again.…
