Personal Narrative: Jonathan's Break Down In Education

Hi Mr. Gural,

I am not sure what the source of the break down in communications has been between the IB Program and Jonathan’s parents. Here is the timeline we followed in developing Johnathan’s course selections.

We(you, your wife and Jonathan) meet in the 10th grade to develop his 2 year plan. Even at that meeting, my form indicates that he needed to attend summer school to take Economics to clear a space in his senior schedule. Even with that it would have been tight, 15 spaces with 3 bands. Meaning he need a zero period every trimester during his senior year.

I remember meeting Mr. Stanley his first semester at Ohio State. He wandered in to Denny Hall lost, looking for his English class, so I gave him directions. We had a conversation during the walk through Denny and he told me he was in the Army. I immediately asked him what brought you to Ohio State after 12 years and his response wanted to go to college to become an Orthopedic Surgeon. His reasoning was very interesting to me because, he received back surgery that was the wrong type of operation, so he wanted to ensure this doesn’t happen to other patients by becoming a surgeon himself.…

I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

I would like to serve as an Alternative Break Scholar because of the impact of my first Alternative Spring Break trip as well as, the impression that my former trip leaders left on me. During my first Alternative Break that was centered around systematic racism with a focus on gentrification and food insecurity I fell in love with the different types of services that my group and I participated in. The specific activity that I participated in was the act of helping to diminish the effects of food insecurity by packing boxes of food to disperse to the populations of people without the access or opportunity to purchase food items. While doing this service, I learned the importance of giving back and being grateful, many of the workers at the…

In 2006, I began my journey at The Valley School as a first grade student. Moving over from my previous school, which I had attended from the time I was three until I was six years old, was fairly smooth. I had friends who made the switch with me and, being the social butterfly I was, making new friends was a breeze. In the first few years as a student, I saw Valley move into three buildings.…

In 2008, all of the female first graders, and probably even a few of the male first graders, had a crush on the same seven year-old kid (for his sake and mine I'm going to change his name to John Smith). In the years to follow, the entire elementary school would have heard of and, of course, fallen for John Smith. But for the moment I, being a naive, newly turned seven year-old, thought that I would be the one to date John Smith. So one day towards the end of the school year, my teacher announced that we would be playing heads-up seven-up!…

Being a high school student is composed of restless nights, and eight exhausting hours of classes in which you are obligated to stay awake in. A normal school day begins with me snoozing my alarm about ten times before my dad walks into my room telling me the dreaded “time to get up for school” reminder which I just take as a suggestion. Normally I will drag myself into the bathroom about ten minutes later to begin my routine. I spend about 40 minutes in the bathroom preparing myself for school and by the time I am done it is usually time to grab all of my things and barely catch the bus. Now this has to be my least favorite part of the day.…

I remember when I was 5, the first time I went to a building daily for 8 hours. I sat down on the cold blue chair. In front of me was a bin of crayons, all the colors of the rainbow: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and purple. I remember sitting in the cold room and having the freedom to draw marks on my blank sheet of paper. The dye scratching against the table, colors spreading across the canvas like the sun, rising in the early morning.…
